We stayed for two nights at half term and found it rather a mixed bag! Arriving, we weren’t shown to the room, but just sent on our way. The corridor carpet was new, but the doors very old-fashioned, so we were pleasantly surprised to find the room nicely furnished – they’ve obviously thought a lot about the décor, or got a designer in and the general effect is good. The only trouble was, although the heated towel-rail and under-floor heating in the bathroom worked fine, the room radiator was cold and it was a chilly evening. The landlord came up and ‘bled’ the radiator, but it made no difference, so in the end we were leant a convector heater.
The restaurant was pleasant and there was plenty of choice but the food is not up to much. The second evening, for a change, we chose a shared plate of nachos then a Mexican dish for the main course. The nachos were great, but despite this being an obvious combination which many people must choose, the main course was very similar in flavour to the first. The wine was good though and there were comfy sofas to repair to for a coffee after the meal. The cooked breakfast, on the other hand, was excellent, one of the tastiest I’ve had in ages: even some places with very posh restaurants don’t do such a good breakfast.
The weather was terrible during our stay and we could have done with a residents’ lounge, although the staff were happy for us to use the sofas in the restaurant, but it was all rather noisy, being near the kitchen and the revolving refrigerated cake stand (why do they bother with those things?).
Would we go again? Certainly for the rooms and the setting, but not for the evening meals.
