“Quiet haven for exploring the Dales with an excellent restaurant”

We really enjoyed our five-day holiday at this hotel, based in the charming village of Malham in the Yorkshire Dales. The Hotel is off the main road, and is quieter than other lodgings in the village. The rooms have recently been refurbished in a tasteful restrained style. The lovely showers are an especially welcome feature after a hard day's walking - powerful, clean, and just the right temperature.
The staff are friendly, and will quickly sort out any problems.
There is an excellent restaurant in the pub that is capable of handling anything on its ever-changing menu from fish and chips to lobster thermidor.
For fans of real ale, this place is a welcome change from the usual range of beers. The pub area is a great place to relax in the evening, with a mix of walkers and locals.

We booked two nights but only stayed for one. On arrival the pub and surroundings seemed lovely and the room was nice. We took our dog so we were only able to eat in the bar area. We went down for food at around 7.00 but there was absolutely no where to sit to eat and we had to go to the bar at the Bucks inn which was awful and cold. There are so many B & B's in Malham and only two pubs which can't cope with the number of visitors. During the night when we were trying to sleep there were people shouting at the tops of their voices and doors banging continuously, it was a nightmare. We explained this to the landlady in the morning and checked out. There were no apologies. Also the breakfast was obviously microwaved sausages from the previous night which were so hard you couldn't cut them. I have never left a review before but felt I had to as this was such a bad experience. We spent our second night at the Bulls Head Hotel in Hawes which was wonderful and the owners were really nice.

This is a lovely building with a great ambiance and history. We had a very comfortable night and the food was simple but tasty. The pub 'did what it said on the tin' and we were not disappointed. The only slight concern we had was that the management has apparently recently changed and the pub is currently being run by an interim manager from the brewery, and so maybe a little longer term continuity is lacking at present. The staff were friendly enough though, and they made sure that we had everything we needed for our stay. The pub has great potential and I am sure that when the new season gets underway and a permanent manager is installed it will be really great again.

“Go for the location, not the restaurant”

Lister Arms Hotel

We stayed for two nights at half term and found it rather a mixed bag! Arriving, we weren’t shown to the room, but just sent on our way. The corridor carpet was new, but the doors very old-fashioned, so we were pleasantly surprised to find the room nicely furnished – they’ve obviously thought a lot about the décor, or got a designer in and the general effect is good. The only trouble was, although the heated towel-rail and under-floor heating in the bathroom worked fine, the room radiator was cold and it was a chilly evening. The landlord came up and ‘bled’ the radiator, but it made no difference, so in the end we were leant a convector heater.

The restaurant was pleasant and there was plenty of choice but the food is not up to much. The second evening, for a change, we chose a shared plate of nachos then a Mexican dish for the main course. The nachos were great, but despite this being an obvious combination which many people must choose, the main course was very similar in flavour to the first. The wine was good though and there were comfy sofas to repair to for a coffee after the meal. The cooked breakfast, on the other hand, was excellent, one of the tastiest I’ve had in ages: even some places with very posh restaurants don’t do such a good breakfast.

The weather was terrible during our stay and we could have done with a residents’ lounge, although the staff were happy for us to use the sofas in the restaurant, but it was all rather noisy, being near the kitchen and the revolving refrigerated cake stand (why do they bother with those things?).

Would we go again? Certainly for the rooms and the setting, but not for the evening meals.

I don't know why this place is described as Skipton! - it's smack in the middle of Malham village and a great base for walking in the surrounding dales. We stayed 3 nights in Room 4: good size, clean, good firm bed, 'bijou' shower-room (my wife still has the scar from the heated radiator!! hoo-hoo, how we laughed!- well, I did anyway). Full English breakfast included in the price (Hey, I was on holiday! - even then though I drew the line at the fried bread!). In the evening a good selection of very nicely done meals in the pleasantly warm, stripped-wood style décor, dining room with big sofas in the middle for pre-prandial drinky-poos. The staff were all very pleasant and helpful.
Minor gripe with the plumbing; the water hammering in the radiator woke me up 2 nights - if I'd had my tools with me I could have helped them out!
The bar has a good range of local beers and was busy during the day and in the evening with probably my wife and me making the most noise playing the table football. Any noise from the bar wasn't a problem in the room though.
The hotel was a great base from which to enjoy the surrounding area - Malham Cove just up the road, Gordale Scar, etc, etc, and I'd recommend it.
