“Nice place, shame about the food”

We stayed here for one night with our 5 year old son. It is a pleasant place in an out of the way village south of Carmarthen. It has clearly got a good local following, and has expanded into a nice tourist facility.

The hotel rooms are bright, clean, simple but perfectly adequate. The staff are friendly and helpful. The leisure centre attached was unexpectedly good with a big pool, plus jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and gym which was a welcome diversion when it poured down outside.

But it is still a pub at heart albeit with expanded facilities. With that in mind, we had no great expectations of the food, but thought we would enjoy good pub fayre. The Brasserie menu seemed to reflect this, plus a few more adventurous options.

But what arrived on the plate was very mediocre. They did try a few extra presentational touches with the sea bass and welsh lamb, but the net effect was a bit sad. Even pubs can usually do good chips, theirs were solid, undercooked and unappetising.

Breakfast in the Brasserie was a dark and dingy affair with horrendous dried out scrambled egg under the heat lamps. To be fair, they did cook us fried eggs on request, but the whole thing was unappetising, and the experience was not improved by the pumping urban music which accompanied it.

OK, so it was out of season, but the food should have been better. We would stay again, but eat elsewhere.

“Nice, solid hotel”

Lets start with the downsides - this place is not the Hilton, its not a grand city hotel nor is it a top business hotel. The restaurant is never going to get a Michlin star nor is the hotel ever going to host international conferences.

What it is is a good solid regional hotel. The rooms are spacious and clean. No appreciable sound from the other rooms and good showers & bathrooms. Service levels are as you would expect from any major hotel chain - the usual disposable toiletries, daily clean towels and room servicing. There was a fridge but empty - presumably for guest use rather than mini-bar.

Pool was superb and way better than you'd expect from a hotel in the middle of no-where. Its big enough to swim lanes in and has a nice big spa bath next to it for those who prefer to relax in the bubbles. Its in a well -built extension with a gym attached.

Restaurant was best classed as upper-end pub food. Breakfast was your normal self service with the usual full english buffet style together with mini-sized cereals with milk jugs. Dinner was a contrast. The chef is obviously very good with meats and less good with veg. Portion control is non-existant - you could live for a week on the mixed grill alone. Had the rare distinction for the UK as well of knowing the difference between medium & rare cooked meats.

Pub was comfy & obviously well used by locals. Good beer selection and a relaxed atmosphere. Bar staff would periodlically go missing and get hunted down by the locals. I got the idea that they'd serve you themsleves though if they didn't find the staff.

Pricing scheme also very inovative - it gets cheaper the longer you stay.

We'd stay again.

“Three Rivers of Quiet”

Three Rivers Hotel

12 Nov 2006

I stayed here while I was working in Camarthen. The hotel is run by an Elderly couple and was fantastic. The rooms were in very good condition and clean.

If you are looking for a place that is quiet then you can't go wrong with this place.

It is a 25 minute cab ride into Camarthen and will costs around £30.

The only downside is that this is a typical village. One Pub and no restaurants or nightlife whatsoever.

This includes the Bar at the hotel, it closes very early and will not stay open under any circumstances as the people who work there are local and want to get home.

The upside is that the locals who do frequent the pub are fantastic and the night flys by. Look out for Penny and her husband Tony who were great and their are many more

The owners, an elderly husband and wife and staff were extremely friendly. I use the word "staff" advisedly, as they seemed to run the hotel on a very few staff. When we were there, the girl overseeing breakfast (the coffee machine had broken) was also the receptionist, and had singly handedly cooked the breakfast, so was constantly on call at reception if anyone came in or the phone rang. The bedroom (we had one on the back 1st floor), was quite large, but very dark and needed electric light on at all times. Unfortunately we didnt partake of the gym jacuzzi and swimming pool, although all these facilities looked of a very good standard, and the gym equipment was quite extensive. The only problem was the food. Breakfast was all pre-cooked, left in dishes and heated by an infra red light. This had the effect of burning the handles of the servers, and drying out the food. More disturbing was dinner - laid out in the same way with cold dishes as "starters", and various hot dishes in containers under the "hot plates". Food had obviously been there for some time as the broccoli had been "bleached" on one side where it had been under the infra red light. Most of the hot dishes with sauces were congealed. As the menu did not change the 2nd night, one wonders if what was not consumed was reheated and put out for the following day. Would certainly consider staying at the hotel again, but certainly not to eat.

“Pleasant Family Run Hotel with Pool near Beach”

Three Rivers Hotel

Enjoyed my stay here as a solitary businessman and may well come back en famille. The bed and room was comfortable and the staff were all polite and friendly. Food was well cooked, very substantial (you're unlikely to make it to the desert) in the home cooking style (and none the worse for that).
Pool was quiet and clean when I went - there is also a gym which looked good but I forgot to bring trainers.
Bar is pleasant and frequented by locals who are happy to engage in intelligent conversation.
Easyish walk round the coast and back over hill (take a stick and wear stout boots as it's wet and slippery at times). Was told it's also possible to walk upstream towards village but didn't find time for that.
