We stayed here for one night with our 5 year old son. It is a pleasant place in an out of the way village south of Carmarthen. It has clearly got a good local following, and has expanded into a nice tourist facility.
The hotel rooms are bright, clean, simple but perfectly adequate. The staff are friendly and helpful. The leisure centre attached was unexpectedly good with a big pool, plus jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and gym which was a welcome diversion when it poured down outside.
But it is still a pub at heart albeit with expanded facilities. With that in mind, we had no great expectations of the food, but thought we would enjoy good pub fayre. The Brasserie menu seemed to reflect this, plus a few more adventurous options.
But what arrived on the plate was very mediocre. They did try a few extra presentational touches with the sea bass and welsh lamb, but the net effect was a bit sad. Even pubs can usually do good chips, theirs were solid, undercooked and unappetising.
Breakfast in the Brasserie was a dark and dingy affair with horrendous dried out scrambled egg under the heat lamps. To be fair, they did cook us fried eggs on request, but the whole thing was unappetising, and the experience was not improved by the pumping urban music which accompanied it.
OK, so it was out of season, but the food should have been better. We would stay again, but eat elsewhere.
