The moment we turned off the car engine on arrival at Underleigh House, Philip Taylor emerged from the house to greet us and offer us tea and cake in the lounge, where we met the majority of the other guests (we had managed to book the last bedroom available that night). We all chatted about where we were going to eat that evening (we chose the local pub - The Cheshire Cheese, good pub food).
Philip and Vivienne Taylor are very attentive to their guests and go to a great deal of trouble to provide everything a guest might possibly need. Breakfast is positively mind-boggling in terms of choice and detail ... quite an assault on the senses if you are not a morning person!
Our bedroom was clean and very comfortable with a modern and well-designed shower room that looked new. It was cosy, cottagey and very chintzy with doilies, little dishes with a sweet dish, a sewing kit dish, teddy bear on the bed, etc. There was a tray with tea and coffee, kettle, etc. and two easy chairs. A small TV that only showed 3 or 4 channels - probably digital TV hasn't reached the Peak District yet? It was lovely, but my only criticism would be that the room was quite small - my tall partner felt a bit cramped (fine for one night, but not longer), the shower room was also small. Additionally, the only way you could open a window in the bedroom would be to open one of the two patio doors on either side of the room. This didn't matter in February, but I would have found it difficult during warmer months.
The house is situated three quarters of the way up the hillside, offering beautiful rural views and the proprietors clearly spend a great deal of energy running their business.
It was a lovely way to spend a night (en route from Stockport to Pontefract on business), however, I would suggest that this was definitely a place for walkers/hikers who enjoy socialising with others (for instance, breakfast is served at one long table and it would be difficult/unfriendly not to feel it necessary to talk to the other guests - perhaps not too good for people who are shy, not good in the morning, or trying to have a romantic weekend).
