The moment we turned off the car engine on arrival at Underleigh House, Philip Taylor emerged from the house to greet us and offer us tea and cake in the lounge, where we met the majority of the other guests (we had managed to book the last bedroom available that night). We all chatted about where we were going to eat that evening (we chose the local pub - The Cheshire Cheese, good pub food).

Philip and Vivienne Taylor are very attentive to their guests and go to a great deal of trouble to provide everything a guest might possibly need. Breakfast is positively mind-boggling in terms of choice and detail ... quite an assault on the senses if you are not a morning person!

Our bedroom was clean and very comfortable with a modern and well-designed shower room that looked new. It was cosy, cottagey and very chintzy with doilies, little dishes with a sweet dish, a sewing kit dish, teddy bear on the bed, etc. There was a tray with tea and coffee, kettle, etc. and two easy chairs. A small TV that only showed 3 or 4 channels - probably digital TV hasn't reached the Peak District yet? It was lovely, but my only criticism would be that the room was quite small - my tall partner felt a bit cramped (fine for one night, but not longer), the shower room was also small. Additionally, the only way you could open a window in the bedroom would be to open one of the two patio doors on either side of the room. This didn't matter in February, but I would have found it difficult during warmer months.

The house is situated three quarters of the way up the hillside, offering beautiful rural views and the proprietors clearly spend a great deal of energy running their business.

It was a lovely way to spend a night (en route from Stockport to Pontefract on business), however, I would suggest that this was definitely a place for walkers/hikers who enjoy socialising with others (for instance, breakfast is served at one long table and it would be difficult/unfriendly not to feel it necessary to talk to the other guests - perhaps not too good for people who are shy, not good in the morning, or trying to have a romantic weekend).

“Simply the best!”

Underleigh House

23 Jan 2008

We have been staying at Underleigh for nine years now. We go at the same time every year & our experience is always wonderful. We began when the property belonged to the Singletons, Barbara & Tony, and thought then it was a fabulous find.We were a little worried when they retired & sold up to Philip & Vivienne; would it, could it be as good?YES INDEED! Our favourite room, Townsend is as cosy as ever, the lemon drizzle cake is moist & tangy, Freddy the feline is there to greet us, along with Tess the dog, & of course Philip & Vivienne, the gracious hosts & owners. The breakfasts are so delicious, we have to plan carefully so as to try out everything on offer. Porridge cooked overnight in the Aga, freshly baked croissants, local bacon & sausage, Philip's own recipe muesili, Derbyshire oatcakes, smoked haddock & an array of scrummy homemade preserves. My favourite is the pinenut one, which I slyly tell other guests is horrid so as to be sure I can hog it to myself!
However I think I have been discovered as Philip now prises it from my grasp to offer to others, despite my wails of protest.
I just wish they made extra to sell so I could enjoy it at home too. All in all a visit to Underleigh is for us like time spent with good friends, in a delightful environment. We're due back again this year & already I'm thinking about it with pleasurable anticipation.
Philip & Vivienne well deserve all the praise their guests give them & the only reason we haven't said so before is we're worried it will get so popular we won't be able to get in! Tom & Cheryl Rimmer

We really can't add more to what has already been submitted in other reviews so we will keep it brief. Suffice to say that we look forward to returning for a further two nights stay at this superlative B & B. One further thought: we live only an hour away from Underleigh House and when, having walked up it, we were at the top one of the peaks looking down on Hope and probably 20 miles in every direction, we thought, why travel a further 3/4 hours to reach Snowdonia or the Lake District when the Peak District is on your doorstep? There really is no need!

Cannot praise this wonderful B&B enough, all of the previous reviews without repeating them were spot on.Both Philip and Vivienne cannot do enough for you and both work very hard to make this in my opinion one of the best .
As in my other reviews I like to comment on one of the most important factors of anywhere I stay -- the bed was very very comfortable

“A perfect stay”

Underleigh House

I can't imagine a more perfect place to stay than Underleigh House. Philip and Vivienne go out of their way to make each guest's stay absolutely delightful, even collecting me from the train station at 9pm on a Friday evening and then going back 2 hours later to fetch my boyfriend who had missed his connection.
Furthermore, Vivienne gave us a lift to the bus stop on saturday morning despite being in the middle of cooking and serving breakfast.

As serious food lovers, we were both thrilled by the breakfast - I hugely recommend the freshly baked croissants, better than any I've ever had in France - and the packed lunches are great value at £5 with more than enough to keep you going for a day on the hills including home made cake.

The room was spotless and welcoming, and as another guest mentioned freebies that you would expect in an expensive hotel including mineral water, fresh fruit, biscuits, an array of teas and coffees and Gilbert & Soames toiletries.

The only bad thing about this trip was having to leave. We came to the Peak District for the climbing and initially I was looking for a place to stay closer to the crag but I'm so glad I decided upon Underleigh House (thanks in part to the glowing reviews on this site).
Philip and Vivienne, thankyou for a perfect weekend and we can't wait to return (hopefully with a car next time so we don't cause so much trouble!!)
