We have stayed at this hotel before and enjoyed the experience overall but the tariff is higher than many 4* establishments we have stayed at and indeed was more than we paid to stay at the 5* Oulton Hall Hotel at Leeds in April!!
The quality of the food is good and the room we had was quiet, of a good size, had a good bed and overlooked the gardens. We did encounter foreign staff and one in particular had difficulty understanding our requests on a couple of occasions in the dining room. The dining room has been upgraded since our first visit and is indeed grand in appearance but it has the atmosphere of a 'morgue'. It is well furnished, but on each occasion we have eaten in there an earie silence existed except for the intermittant whisperings of the few other diners. We asked if they ever had background music playing and we were told the previous manager had allowed it but it was no longer permitted. I would think that the smaller Terrace room would be a more suitable place to use for dining when so few are in residence.
The hotel is in a great location for visiting the town and the surrounding places of special interest. Most of the staff were local people who are so friendly and helpful but one of the receptionists, whilst polite and efficient, did not impart any signs of welcome to the hotel when we signed in. However, having said all this we would stay here again and hope that next time there will be a bit of a welcoming atmosphere in the dining room and not a feeling of being overwhelmed by the grandeur and silence in the room.
