Fourth trip to the Trident and it never fails to please in terms of scenery, location, comfort and cuisine. The hotel is a bit dull from the outside (especially from the main road), but inside it is cosy, friendly and welcoming. Make sure to get a room with a sea-view (an executive room) because the view makes this hotel. The breakfast and dinner were splendid, though the evening menu did not change from day to day (perhaps due to it being low season?). The bar has a great local feel and if there is a ship in in the harbour it will be being unloaded under your nose as you drink or eat in the bar (the Bar menu is substantial and a good alternative to the more expensive hotel restaurant). Though the hotel was quiet, there was a constant throughput of locals in the bar and always something interesting happening outside on the pier.
Our room was clean, tidy and well maintained for the duration of our three night stay. Stocks of mineral water, coffee etc were replenished daily, as were the toiletries in the bathroom. The bed was exceptionally comfy. No minibar though.
Don't expect a five-star leisure centre. The gym is in need of an overhaul, but the one treadmill, single bike and sole step-machine were modern. The sauna, steamroom and jacuzzi are oldish, but they won't let you down and the chances are there'll be Kinsale people in using them and you'll have the chance to have a chat. There are good paths and backroads to run locally, so the gym is second-best in any case.
Our first trip to the Trident was in 2001 and each return visit has been as good, if not better, than the previous. Kinsale is a great location, especially when it is quieter in the winter months.
