“Personal Attention”

Bunratty Woods Country House

3 Oct 2007

I booked directly via telephone with Maureen two days prior to my stay. She was very helpful on the phone, even knew when my flight would be leaving! They discount your rate if you aren't able to stay for breakfast. I was very pleasantlyl surprised by the warm personal decor and atmosphere of the house. Paddy greeted us on arrival, settled us in our room, and gave us the tour. Maureen offered to change our room as ours was at the end of the house and prone to be chilly, but we declined. Maureen was warm and friendly and very helpful with suggestions for meals and internet access. I must say that the beds were the most comfortable I slept on in my 15 days in Ireland. I am sorry we weren't able to sample the breakfast. I would stay at Bunratty Woods again. I have read the other reviews and had no hint of ill feeling towards Americans at all.

We had a very nice visit to Bunratty Woods for one night in August 2007. We stayed in a comfortable family room, with a double and two twins, table/chairs, and ensuite bathroom with shower. There was a nice tea service in the main hall, with trays to take back to rooms. The inn was beautifully decorated with interesting memorabilia, and had a lovely, expansive lawn with a garden/sitting area. The b & b was a short drive (or longer walk) from the Folk Park and Castle. I would walk it during the day, but would recommend a taxi at night, since the road is dark, narrow, and seemed well-traveled.

I was very surprised to read the few reviews on this site that paint the hostess as a nasty hater of Americans, since our experience was just the opposite. We were traveling with 4 children (3 boys under age 12, and a teen girl) so we were not the "typical" b & b guests. However, we felt quite welcome. Indeed, when Maureen and Paddy noticed our sons playing with their new hurleys (hurling sticks, for the uninitiated) on the front lawn, they each came out in turn and gave the kids a lesson on proper technique and rules of the game. The kids were thrilled. On the other hand, I did notice that the property was for sale, so perhaps this would explain if Maureen was irritated by someone apparently walking off the road and taking pictures of the property. Just a theory, for what it's worth.

My only complaint would be the very narrow window for breakfast service in the morning -- one hour if I recall. In addition, when my husband and son came down in the last 15 minutes of this window, I had to continually remind the server to replenish the dishes that were running out. (This would be more understandable were it a 3 hr breakfast and they were sauntering in at the last minute, but not if they only had one hour.)
The breakfast itself was yummy, but the reluctant server put us off somewhat.

In summary, we had a very nice stay at Bunratty Woods, and I would recommend it to a friend.

I booked a room at this particular B&B based on its good reviews and the opportunity for early check in. We received an email from the hostess, Maureen, prior to our departure from the US with specific windows of time for check in. When we arrived within the stated morning time frame, the door was locked and there was a note on the door stating they would return at 2:30! My three children and I had flown overnight and were really looking forward to a nap and a shower. Maureen arrived shortly after 2PM, without apology or explanation. We were quickly shown to our rooms and were grateful for speedy check in. Our two rooms were spacious and clean. Beds were comfortable and hot water was plentiful. Each room had a TV and there was a 24 hour coffee/tea making nook downstairs. There was a bit of hallway noise, but none from outside the B&B. Breakfast was buffet style and was good.
All in all...not a terrible experience but in contrast to some truly outstanding B&B's during our two week stay in Ireland, I'd probably give something else in the area a try next time.

We arrived at Bunratty Woods a day early, after calling to be sure Maureen had room for us. She told us she did and after a wet day driving from Clifden, we arrived. Maureen showed us to our rooms and was most charming. That night a guest, who seemed a little addled, began beating on my mother's door (which she didn't open) for about a half hour. Then he went to other doors until someone finally opened their door to him.
We toured Bunratty Castle and Folk Park the next day. After having lunch my husband, a very mild mannered PHd and family photographer, decided to walk back to the B&B while we shopped. He was taking pictures of the house and the yard when Maureen appeared. She said "You are an American, aren't you?" He said, of course. She then began to verbally assault him for being a RUDE AMERICAN, that she had been to "Your Country", etc. He tried to tell her he was a guest there. She replied, "You are not". He showed her his key. She mumbled some apology and left it at that. My mother, when checking out, said something to her and she just said something to the tone of if he's upset, too bad. So, we paid for our two nights, since we had an early flight home and went to bed. And no, she did not offer to get up and serve us a early breakfast.
It seems that Maureen doesn't mind taking American's money but she, by accident, let it be known her true feelings towards Americans.

We came to Bunratty Woods after checking your reviews from other people. It was close to the airport and Bunratty Castle which made the location perfect for us.
We(my husband, our daughter and her husband and me) arrived
and were greeted by Maureen herself. She was delightful and glad to help us with our plans. We went to the banquet at Bunratty Castle and had a wonderful time. Our daughter and husband left early the next morning for home, leaving us without a car.We planned on walking about after breakfast and go to the folk park. Breakfast was wonderful, pancakes light as air with many other choices.
It started to rain and Maureen insisted she drive us to the park.
She was a perfect hostess and a very warm and loving person. I heartily recommend this lovely place. She made it hard to leave. We will surely stay with her again on our next visit.
