Our stay at the Hotel New York in late March was a great experience. Without going into all the "what we did" details, I'll try and point out some details about the hotel and the park that others haven't covered or you can't find on the web site.
First off, my husband and I took our three small children, 6, 4 and 21 months. Traveling there, for us, meant flying from Italy, arriving at CDG and finding a way to the hotel. There are many options to get to the Disney Park hotels, private shuttles are costly, even the VEA shuttle was only a bit less than a private shuttle and apparently makes so many stops that you are on it forever. We chose to take the train, not the RER train, the TGV from CDG to Disney. The bonus, once you board the TGV, you arrive at the Disney stop in 8 minutes... yes I said 8. Shuttles are nearly an hour (or much more on the VEA which was €60 for our size family). For the 5 of us it was €70 total on the TGV and the return only €45. I asked why the difference in price, they said it depends on the time you travel. The TGV web site may be helpful in selecting times, buying tickets in advance, and general info. The line to buy tickets for the TGV at the station can be long, and the people who give out information completely led me down the wrong path until I spoke to the TGV people directly. The roundtrip fare was less than any other option and for an eight minute ride, you can't go wrong!
The TGV/train station is in the heart of Disney Village, so once you exit the train station, you cross the street and hop on a free shuttle to your hotel. You can walk if you are with few bags, older children, and good weather... it's a five minute walk through Disney Village to reach the rear doors of the Hotel New York... exit to the right going away from the shuttle buses and then you'll walk to the left. (going right leads you to the parks).
Check-in was easy as there was not a crowd when we arrived. It was 1:45pm, so we were early for a 3pm check in time. The weather was horrible, cold, windy and a bit rainy, so I wanted to get into the room and get settled as there was no way we were going to the parks right away. I managed to get our room key immediately by telling them (with a voice of desperation) that my son was ill and needed medication. It was actually the truth, but stretched a bit. They immediately gave us a room key anyway.
My first impression of the hotel was very positive. The layout was welcoming and warm... the lobby overlooks the ice rink in the rear... fun displays in the window of the shop to distract the kids while checking in... a play area for children (to the right of the concierge desk) which is very handy when check-in is long. There is not much there to do frankly, but my kids were fairly entertained by the oversized Lego blocks and other children.
The room itself was quite nice. We were in a standard room with two queen beds. The room was large, but not huge. There is a very tall dresser/tv unit with plenty of storage space for clothes, a good-sized closet with ample hangers, extra shelves and extra pillows. The dresser height was actually a great benefit as my kids couldn't get to anything we put on top! Channel 5 on the tv is in english.
We requested a porta crib which was very good quality (although no porta crib seems to have a decent mattress, so I come prepared). Luckily given the decent size of the room, there was a nook adjacent to the dresser where the crib fit snuggly and out of the way. The room was clean, had a nice bathroom, two sinks, large bath tub and there are Mickey Mouse soaps, shampoo and bath gel which creates VERY good bubbles in the bath. Shower had good pressure and plenty of towels.
The poor weather continued, but we needed to find a bite to eat without going too far. We were told by the concierge (VERY helpful with all details) that the hotel did not have food to offer at that hour (2:30pm), but directed us to the Disney Village. Going out the back door of the hotel, and to the right, you arrive at the edge of the Disney Village in three minutes. There you find a host of shops with all the Disney paraphenalia, many resturants and eateries including McDonalds if you want to keep it simple for a meal. Make reservations with the concierge for any meal in the evening.
One of the restaurants especially close to the hotel is Mickey's Diner. I HIGHLY recommend this restaurant for anyone with small children, expecially those not inclined to stay in their seats. Being out of your seat is the norm there, as the Disney characters are out in force (i.e. Mickey, Minnie, Pluto, Goofy, Capt. Hook, many more)... the menu had a good variety of choices and the food was definitely decent. The birthday celebration is great fun as the characters come to the table when the cake arrives... dancing to loud(ish) disco music, and the whole restaurant joins in clapping, etc. There were 4 children having Bday celebrations during our meal and each time the kids were thrilled to celebrate along with them. It also was one of the first dinners the children actually ate! So despite all the distractions, the food was good enough to tempt them.
Back to the hotel, We ate at both restaurants for breakfast and disagree about any negative comments. I am not easily pleased with buffet food in general, but there was a huge variety of cold items (yogurts, kids yogurts, buns, rolls, pastries, cereals, etc.) and FRESh fruit, not canned... FRESH squeezed OJ, not from the carton. The rolls/buns/breads were all really good... I am WAY too picky to not be honest about that kind of thing. The hot food I can't speak to frankly as I stuck to the vast selection of other items. Coffee came out of a machine, frankly I think this was the one fault. There is some indication in earlier reviews that the food served in the diner is sub-par to the food in the larger "Manhattan" restaurant, but the morning fare is exactly the same in both places... it's just a bit less crowded people-wise in the larger, more formal restaurant. I agree with everyone who mentioned getting to breakfast early. If you can make it by 8 a.m. you are okay, try for a few minutes earlier for a more peaceful experience in the diner especially.
We tried both the pool and the ice rink... the ice rink is €9 a person (unlimited time as far as I could tell), and there is skate rental for an additional few euros. My 6 year old son had the time of his life. When he awoke the next morning all he wanted to do was skate again... never mind the parks... so it was a hit with him and well worth the €s to watch his face while skating.
The weather remained not great, so the pool became one of our afternoon excursions once the rain drove us back to the hotel early. There are dressing rooms with complimentary lockers with a key for your clothes/things. There are sauna rooms in the changing rooms as well. They supply towels, and have some inflatable arm bands, but only a few pairs. The pool was not crowded when we went and there were none available. (Easy item to pack anyway... bring some for sure if you use them on the kids). There are kick-boards and buoys available. The pool, as mentioned, is very deep and you cannot touch unless you are quite tall (about 6' ). The whirlpool/jacuzzi is lovely... it is very large, attached to the pool itself so you can keep watch over the kids, and it is not overly hot, so you can stay in it for a long time and not get cooked. No bathing caps are required.
The hotel bar is very nice and has a fun menu of less pricey , yet fancy drinks made without alcohol. They are a mix of soda and colored/flavored syrups and arrive with a gummy candies on a mini sword... talk about your sugar overload, but treating the kids to a grown up "cocktails" experience was a fun one-time thing.
The one thing I'd steer clear of is the game room... it was insanely expensive to play one game and they all seemed to last for about 30 seconds. We stuck to the air hockey and got a little more for the money!
As far as the main park is concerned, yes, you absolutely have to get up and out early or you may not get on many rides at all. It's a ten minute walk from hotel door to the park gates, but there is a free shuttle if you prefer that. The Disney web site gives you the impression that the entire park is open early, and this is not the case. Only portions of the park are open (Fantasyland mostly). We did take advantage of the "little kids'" rides because waiting in lines/cues was not going to work for us with three under 6. One bit of advice... in Frontierland there is a nice playground for all kids to come and go as they please located behind the cue for Thunder Mountain. If your older child wants to wait in line for the coaster, the younger kid(s) at least have a place to play while they wait. There are other areas of the park with similar play places where the younger ones can stay with the older ones cue. After 10 am the lines become too much and generally it's terribly crowded (remember we had cold temps, wind, and rain too), so even with poor weather you can't avoid the crowds.
Stroller rental at €7 a day was fabulous as they were good quality tri-strollers and a welcomed bargain for our unpreparedness in not bringing an extra. (To take the stroller out of the park, you need to make a €70 deposit that you obviously are refunded when you return it). You can take the stroller anywhere (hotel too) as long as you have made the deposit.
Frankly, overall I'd not recommend going to Disney with 3 small kids unless you have more help than just you and your companion/spouse... unless the kids are Disneyhaulics. My kids were really not that into the Disney experience... they were a bit overwhelmed with the people and things to see... sort of information overload... and they are not shy types at all. It was frustrating to tell my son a number of times that we couldn't go on a ride because we were not waiting an hour and a half, time and time again, in line. So many things we would have liked to do, we didn't.
The hotel however could not have been better situated, more accomodating or suitable for our stay. We really enjoyed our stay and would go back again despite the temptation to try another hotel. Good Luck and I hope you have a wonderful vacation!
