We had booked four rooms at The Laurels as the web site looked so impressive and boasted a 4* rating, we found out latter that the rating is self assessed, The Laurels is NOT affiliated to any recognised body. this was our first mistake, our second mistake was to pay cash for the rooms we had yet to be shown (payment in advance is mandatory), the reason for paying cash was due solely to the whopping 5% charge for using any cards including Debit cards, there was no formal check in the receptionist simply took our cash and we were just handed the keys. As we climbed the stairs the alarm bells started ringing, the stairs to the first floor were absolutely filthy this included used cotton buds in the corners, some of our friends had ground floor rooms so escaped this experience, Our double room was in fact a single room with a double bed wedged into it and as a result to get in and out of bed you either climbed over your partner or slid off the end of the bed, the room had no en-suite but instead it had what was enthusiastically titled a “private bathroom” which basically meant a bathroom across the landing shared with others that included a WC that anybody could use, I would point out at this point that the “private bathroom” was also filthy.
Our room along with the other 3 rooms were also filthy with thick dust on every surface and stains on the bed linen, we had one towel and we were asked to pay for additional towels in fact all our rooms were equipped with one towel including the family rooms we had. Tea and coffee making facilities were in the rooms however the cups were not.
TV reception was appalling and limited to just a few channels, on returning to the reception to complain it was noted that this area was also filthy with the floor still had tinsel on it the furniture in this room was also covered in a thick layer of dust.
Our complaints fell on deaf ears the staff simply were not interested, we asked for a refund and were flatly refused, we asked to see the manager and were told he was in London and that we would have to wait two hours for him to return which we did, our complaints to him also fell on deaf ears and a refund to enable us to go elsewhere was also refused.
We insisted the manager inspect the filthy stairs, his response was simply “you have not paid to sleep on the stairs” upon us showing him the filthy rooms his response was a deafening silence.
Quite simply The Laurels trade by deception with a great number of hidden charges and as a result it would be cheaper and significantly more enjoyable to stay in one of the large chain hotels nearer the airport at least then if you had a problem it would be swiftly dealt with.
