On arrival 6th September 2007 we were checked in at reception and shown to our apartment which was to be 'home' for the next 14 days. My husband who is aged 67 had to carry 2 quite heavy suitcases containing 14 days clothing etc down several steps and then up 2 short flights of stairs without any help offered whatsoever. The apartment was clean and well equipped and first impressions were good. However, we soon discovered that the supermarket advertised as 700 metres away was not very good. (We later discovered Jaffers which was excellent but a little further away) This was a bit disappointing as the complex is uphill on the return visit and carrying food and water is not for the faint hearted! The mini market on site is extraordinarily expensive and shuts everyday from 12.30 til 3pm. and 6pm is closing time in the evening. We decided not to let this get us down and so make the best of the holiday and the good weather.
Were we in for a shock? Only when the folk above us returned from their night out did we discover that the walls and the floor/ceiling were paper thin. The folk were not doing anything abnormal except getting supper and going to bed but little did they realise they sounded like a herd of elephants and every time they moved their chairs or walked across the wooden floor it was like a mini earthquake, especially with wearing flip flops. No point in complaining, as I said, they were doing nothing wrong. Even the sound of them going to the toilet and flushing the chain could be heard quite clearly. We stayed in room 2111 and unfortunately got very little undisturbed sleep. The second week was worse as the people who were above us decided to move the furniture about each night when they came back to their apartment. It was a nightmare!!
This was our first visit to Vilamoura having always stayed in Albufeira previously in and around the Montechoro area and so we found Vilamoura to be a little more expensive although the Mayflower restaurant at the Marina is definitely a cut above. Lovely food and very nice waiting staff.
Late in the second week we discovered Quarteira and wished with all our hearts that we had found it earlier. What a lovely resort.
Pinal da Marina is fine if you have hired a car or for young people who are very fit but personally I think a courtesy bus to the beach and the marina area a couple of times a day would be a tremendous addition to the complex and also, the reception area where the library and the Internet are housed could perhaps be opened in the evenings when the sun has gone down or alternatively have these facilities moved to the bar/lounge area which is opened at more convenient times. Who wants to go to the library or the Internet during sunbathing and swimming times? No Pinal da Marina is not for us and we definitely will not be back or recommend it to anyone else.
