Words cannot describe this hotel! We come to Gran Canaria every year but this is by far the best hotel we've stayed in! We stayed with Thomson, B&B for 1 weeks stay.
Arrival and Cleanliness
We arrived early morning on 29th May and was greeted by a very polite smiley receptionist, we were then directed to our room on the 3rd floor with a detailed map. The room was clean, tidy and spacious which had a balcony, the view wasn't much, just a grassy verge overlooking some other hotel rooms, but we didn't expect a seaview from the bargain price we paid for the holiday.
The rooms are cleaned thoroughly on a daily basis and even the mattresses changed once throughout the week, the cleaners are polite and speak a little english. We had our 'do not disturb sign up' when we didn't leave our room once till 11am and we still got our room cleaned later on.
The Hotel
The hotel is huge, the gardens are amazing with lots of impressive fountains, and has seven swimming pools, one of which is the biggest on the island, I loved the pool bar, there is a lazy river also. I agree about the towels though, all the good sunbeds seem to get taken first early morning around the pool, but that happens in most hotels I've found anyway! We still managed to find some, but alot are in the shade due to the palm trees. We are not ones for staying around the pool anyway, we tend to go to the beach. There is a nice view of Maspalomas from the towers and these can be reached by taking the lift to the 8th floor, and climbing a few steps, what a view!!
The hotel has morning activities, including impressive Thai Chi classes around the big pool, there is a spa that I've been told is very relaxing, a small well lit cave where you can walk under the waterfall, tennis court, putting green, table tennis and I'm sure alot more I didn't get to see. Evening entertainment is outside at the back of the hotel with plenty of seating and waiters taking your drinks orders, the entertainment varies, we had a magician, singers, mime artist and other talents on the stage, excellent! There are also numerous bars inside the hotel where the prices are reasonable and staff are really friendly.
We visited the Casino just outside the entrance of the hotel, and had such a laugh, you need to take your passport with you for ID purposes but it's free entry with a glass of champagne on arrival! You don't have to spend a fortune, there is a poker table, Roulette tables and Black Jack, also numerous fruit machines, all the staff are helpful and provide you with instructions how to play if you're not sure, it's well worth a visit!
Food
The meals in the hotel are all buffy style, you can choose to be seated inside or outside, there are plenty of tables, Breakfast is varied...cereals, fruit, cooked meats, fried breakfasts and some wierd looking spanish stuff which I didn't try but I'm sure is nice.
Evening meals are varied also, we paid 18 Euros each for a 3 course meal in the main room, which was very tasty.
We also ate in one of the two Restaurants overlooking the sea (can't remember the name), the staff are very friendly and the view is amazing over looking the sunset! Beautiful and romantic!!
There are numerous restaurants nearby on the Promenade, I would recommend The 19th Hole, the waiters are very friendly, happy and really look like they enjoy working there, they can also speak excellent English and they have varied music playing with television screens showing the artists. Oh, and the food is to die for!!
Hotel Extra
I had a slight accident in the lift one morning, where the floor was not level when entering the lift, I banged my toe and I couldn't have asked for a better service from the staff. The receptionist Manager ordered the lift to be fixed there and then, we had a taxi paid for to the clinic and back just to check I hadn't done anything serious to my toe, the next day we had a complimentary bottle of wine delivered with an apology, customer relations rang to ask if there was anything else they could do for us and because of my accident we had our room extended on the last day for free.
Maspalomas Beach
What a beach!!!!....only a 3 minute walk from the hotel, finding a sunbed is easy, it's a clean and a well staffed beach, with refreshment bars along it, as you walk down the beach there is a family area, a nudist area then a gay area...but these are harmless and if you carry on it's a nice scenic walk to Playa De Ingles. The sand dunes are amazing, a lovely walk but the sand is very hot so not to be walked on bear foot. I love this beach, the only thing I'd say is the Lucky Lucky Men can be abit annoying and chinese men asking if you want a massage, but they are harmless! It's not as bad as some places on the Island!
Nightlife
Maspalomas is good for bars and restaurants but if you want a proper nightlife Playa De Ingles is the place to go if you want a laugh. It's only 4 Euros in a taxi from Maspalomas and I think the best place to go is the Jumbo Centre, they have excellent restaurants and bars with entertainment happening such as Drag shows which are hilliarous. The Jumbo Centre is the gay capital, so as you can expect all the waiters and staff are very friendly and lively.
The Kas Bar is very busy full of bars and dancing clubs such as Ministry of Sound, Cream....etc. But there are alot of English PR's trying to pursuade you to go into their bars which can get abit annoying, but if you like that kind of thing then you would like the Kas Bar.
All in all we had an excellent holiday, I couldn't recommend this place enough, especially the hotel, everyone on our transfer bus was jealous of us staying there, it is impressive from the outside
