Having read some of the poor reviews here, we were wondering what sort of weeks vacation we we in for.
We were looking for a one week dash to the sun in January 2008 before I started my new job. We have stayed in Riu hotels before and have always been impressed with the level of service and quality of food.
In the event, we need not have worried - we had a very nice time right from the moment we arrived and were given a glass of Cava and my wife was given a red rose by the concierge.
Of course, being out of season, we expected a lot of older guests and so it proved. There were also a lot of Germans (about 50% of the guests seemed to be German). But as the Riu hotel is jointly German and Spanish owned this is to be expected. Also, from experience, wherever you get Germans staying, you also get quality of service, food and hotel.
The decor was very pleasant and classy without being OTT and the Hotel manager took great pains to be seen walking about and ensuring everything worked efficiently and smoothly. Many of the guests seemed to be regulars and we can understand why.
The location of the hotel is fine - right on the Maspalomas Beach but you have to walk through the gardens to get to it and the hotel probably does not have stunning beach and sea views. We had a garden room which was fine and the room itself was large and adequate without being over fussy. The room furniture was light oak finish with some nice soft furnishings. The bathroom had his and hers wash basins, a bath/shower, toilet and bidet which were all in good order.
The staff were very pleasant and seemed to try hard to make guests welcome. The food was excellent; breakfast was a very varied buffet which catered for everyone with fresh fruit, pastries, cereals, breads, jams, grilled items, omelette's and even Cava. Dinner was a beautifully presented buffet of local foods and European recipes including great salads and soups. The service we got from our waiter each night was superb - he couldn't have been any better.
The evening entertainment was naff - but no surprises there as every hotel we have ever stayed in has had the dreaded euro-pap covers duo/quartet to contend with. However, many of the older (60+) guests seemed to enjoy it and waltzed the night away - or at least to their bedtime at 10.00pm!!!
The gardens of this hotel are superb - lots of mature palm trees and grass areas to hide your sunbeds under if you want peace and quiet and some shade. The pool is an old fashioned (1970's) oblong shape but very well maintained and exceptionally clean.
A short walk away is the very new promenade and the resort of Meloneras and this has many top brand shops, bars and restaurants, a few with live music each evening. Closer to the hotel is a strip of cheap eateries so you pay your money and take your pick.
We really enjoyed our stay and were sorry to leave. We have no hesitation in recommending this hotel for a quiet relaxing stay but not with children unless you want to get onto the beach each day.
I stay in 5 Star hotels every week as part of my job - Hilton's, Sheraton's, Marriott's and the like and would compare Riu Palace hotels on a par with these. However, it never ceases to amaze me what some people expect for a five star hotel and the comments here are testimony to that.
You will also notice that the poor comments stop in Dec 2006 and since then, comments and scores have been more positive. This seems to have coincided with a change of manager and a refurbishment.
Finally, one last tip - ALWAYS upgrade your room - hotels have sea views, garden views - and views of the car parks/hotel next door/main road etc and if you don't want to be lumbered with those, then pay for an upgrade. We are glad we did in this case.
In short, this was a very pleasant hotel, excellent food and decent location and we would be very pleased to go back.
