We were guests of Green Golf on this our second visit. The first in February 2007 did not go very well and this was thier way of saying sorry by inviting us back for a free week. Check-in was very quickly done and we put 100EUR deposit on our room account as the resort does not operate with cash. All purchases and services are charged through the keycard. Receipts should be kept to make sure the bill does tally up.
Our two-bedroomed duplex apartment was fantastic, more like a house. A twin bedroom at the rear, next to it a small shower room with toilet and wash basin. A large fully equipped kitchen complete with full oven and hob, microwave, kettle, toaster and full size fridge is available should you feel the need to knock up a meal. The large lounge diner was tastefully furnished with higher standard furniture than you normally find in Canarian accommodation. A large full width Balcony complete with table and four chairs and an all important clothes airer is available on this floor. The real gem of this duplex is the master suite downstairs. Three double wardrobes, chest of drawers and also a TV in addition to the one in the lounge. Large bed made up of two singles. A massive ensuite bathroom with twin washbasins and fullsize bath and shower, toilet and bidet is also provided. French doors lead out onto large terrace part shaded by the balcony above.
The supermarket onsite is ok for buying mik, bread and butter but the shops in town are cheaper. A self service laundry room is available if you dont like taking dirty clothes home. The pool and surrounding grounds are immaculatey presented, The pool is divided in half by a walkway. In winter one side is heated, as we found out the previous visit but am sure it was not heated this time. The Jacuzzi also was not working. If you dont like to cook for yourself you can get breakfast at the very welcoming poolside bar. The complex has an animation routine which is shown in reception, detailing the daily activities. A courtesy bus runs to the beach and back several times a day, however its a nice enough 20/25 min walk if you prefer. Probably not at night though. Taxi's are available at the end of the road. Be cautious though. I found a lot of the drivers assume you dont know the way around and took you long routes or deliberately out of the way. On one trip I asked to get out and walked the rest. I once lived here and it does not fool me.
I used to frequent the Aberdeen Steakhouse chain of restaurants whilst holidaying on Tenerife in the past and we ventured to the one opposite the Aparthotel Columbus as a group of 8 during this holiday. I will never, EVER go back or recommend them to anyone else. We asked for four seperate bills, one for each couple, but they refused stating "it is better for you to have one together" In the end we asked them to split the table in half and we agreed four to each bill. Two on my table had shards of plastic in the Ice-Cream which the waiter looked at indifferently before taking away, Leaving the Ice-Cream - Like they still wanted to eat it! When we got the two bills, we were told our bill had the two desserts removed which fine, we accepted but then they had added drinks we never ordered and the waiter became aggressive stating we did have it. In the end the bill was altered we paid and left, the other half of our group though faired worse. They were charged for desserts that HAD been ordered but NOT delivered. The drinks we disputed had also been added to thier bill. I was really Irate, I wont ever go to one again. thier customer service is shocking and they blatantly try to rip people off, this is why its "better to have on big bill" because its easier to hide little additions you never ordered or had. Sorry that is quite a rant about one thing, but please be warned. Good restaurants though include Merlins Chinese Buffet, opoosite Parque Santiago II, Colon Beach in Puerto Colon and Miss Kitty's Showbar in Playa de Fanabe.
Overall Playa de las Americas is a rapidly changing resort. The area around the Mare Nostrum Resort is my favorite, especially at night. Americas Plaza and the Safari Centre look great lit up and the dancing fountains. It seems this kind of look is spreading as even the Veronicas Area is now pedestrianised and looks far more upmarket than I ever thought was possible. I would not hesitate to go back or tell friends and family to, it has something for everyone. Just make sure you get out and see more of the Island outside of the Las Americas/Los Cristianos areas.
