“Surprisingly good apartment - relaxing holiday”

Hotel Palia Don Pedro

1 Apr 2008

We have just returned from a week in the Palia Don Pedro Hotel Tenerife. 1 bedroom apartment supposed to be 2 star so dreading it but it was great, a big apartment, daily cleaner and change of towels, great staff at the resort, beautiful pool. Family entertainment stopped by midnight so no worry of late night drunken rabble. Nice relaxing week getting some sun. The resort however Costa del Scilencio has nothing to offer NO beaches anywhere and very odd centre to Galletas with a harbour. Can recommend a fantastic restaurant in Galletas, Bohemia run by father and daughter fantastic food and company. The kiss me quick road with fish and chips is not far away but we managed to eat in Spanish restaurants which is our preference! We were pleasantly surprised all round by the holiday - certainly not cultural but very relaxing sun holiday.

we returned from the hotel 21/3/08 we stayed a week self catering,
we had a lovely time, the hotel room was cleaned every day and the towels were changed twice in the week. (There wasnt a kettle or toaster in the room,) but i think you could hire them from reception, as said in other reveiws the hotel does cater for obviously spanish and french, and english so when the entertainment is on they do have to repeat everything so everyone understands! so dont play bingo!!!!!! we did, never again ,
Thers plenty of bars and places to eat just a short walk away.
We also went on a trip to aqua land the waterpark, we had a great time! the dolphin show was amazing!
overall had a lovely time at the hotel, the weather was lovely and hot during the day, but abit windy and chilly in the eveining.

We have just come back from a week half board at the hotel complex. For the price you get very much what you pay for. Initially we were given a room right next to the bar but on request were given a quieter room a couple of blocks away. I haven’t seen it mentioned in any reviews about the complex that some of the rooms (actually small apartments) are privately owned. These are spread around the complex. A few of the occupants of these apartments own dogs that follow the general Spanish idea at barking at everything and anything any time over a 24 hour period. Unfortunately one of these dogs was a couple of apartments away from us, enough said! I love dogs but not quite so much when they are allowed to bark on the veranda during the night. The complex is also just under the last stages of planes landing at the nearby airport. We don’t mind this at all and the last planes seemed to be about 11pm ish.

Staff are generally very friendly and reception helpful. Guests are mainly from France and the UK and the first language of staff (other than Spanish) tends to be French but they are ready and willing to have a go in English. Housekeeping is adequate, not fantastic but our apartment was kept pretty clean and towels and bedding changed. Some of the towels were a bit thin but there was plenty of hot water.

Food is again what you would expect for the money. Adequate if not inspiring. True vegetarians might be a little pushed at dinner time to have much of a choice. Just to note if you go all inclusive or pay for each meal at the time you eat, a carafe of wine and a carafe of water is included. If you are half board you pay extra for wine and/or water. You are not allowed to take your own drinks into the restaurant.

Maintenance is OK, they were giving the complex a new coat of paint whilst we were there. Our patio doors didn’t fit properly and had a large gap where the floor tiles stuck out pushing one of the patio doors out of line. As the weather was good this wasn’t a problem but did cause the curtains to blow a bit!

Would we go there again? If we wanted somewhere OK for a price and a basis for going round and about for walks and drives yes, if the hotel and its facilities were a big part of our holiday? no.

I stayed with my Family over the pre Easter week, This Hotel is really budget accomodation, we had a two bedroom apartment, seperated by a lounge , kitchenette, which had a fridge and a four ring gas hob.
I have yet to give a properly poor review of a place I have stayed in, but if truth be told, I didn't enjoy my stay and was pleased to get home, its remote from the town which is a hefty walk away, or five euros by taxi, there is a strip of food outlets nearer but they are more expensive than the town.
The Hotel caters in the main to middle aged French clients, including the entertainment, which reminded me of my daughters school plays not so many years ago.
The water was never warm, and the kitchen had no kettle though we improvised with a pan we found in one of the cupboards, (along with a cheeseboard and a big ladle which was the sum total of the kitchen equipment).
We had two single beds in our room, pushed together, each dressed with one blanket and a bedspread. The only saving grace were the staff, who I can honestly say were the nicest people you could possibly hope to meet, the reception staff were always courteous, to a fault, nothing seemed beyond their genuine desire to assist.
In short its a cold, bleak place, with great staff, and unbelievably one of my wifes bras went missing whilst we were out for the day. I am led to understand that they can be an expensive item, but even so.
Anyway one ray of sunshine if you get depressed, there is a very good retaurant in Las Galletas called 'Fabiola' it is in the underground shopping center by the big concrete bell tower and difficult to find if you aren't already aware it is there. It is well worth a visit, the food is top notch, and good food places are in short supply, so pay at least one visit early in your stay, it will probably become your local, if not the 'Atlantida' is on the sea front at the opposite end of town.
I hope I haven't painted too bad a picture, but I'm telling it like it is so you won't be too disappointed if you stay here, basically Don Pedro has a shower and beds, anything else might be seen as showing off, but it is bargain basement, and I won't be staying again, even though I worked out it only cost £7 per person per night . You get what you pay for.

“Good hotel with some reservations”

Hotel Palia Don Pedro

I have just stayed at this hotel and thought it was OK. The hotel is quite hard to find being located before Las Galletas, just off an avenue in Costa del Silencio. (Confusingly, there appears to be another Palia Don Pedro hotel on the same street name in Arona, just up the mountain. Make sure you know which you are booking).
The hotel appears modern with whitewashed walls and a nice glass entrance & pool area but some parts of the rooms are basic and dated indicating a good but not perfect recent makeover. There was no microwave or cooking utensils in my room even though I had booked self-catering (thankfully I was given a half-board dining card so in this sense I was lucky). However, the bathroom was very nice and modern and the rooms are extremely clean with maids entering everyday to change towels and beds.
The major caveat with staying at this hotel though is noise. The walls are paper thin and seem to amplify any noise making things much worse. If you don't like noise - stay elsewhere. However, the hotel management seem to be aware of this and there is a sense that you should be quiet, with respect for other residents.
Your fellow guests are likely to be middle aged French, Spanish and English. There is not an awful lot for kids to do and I didn't see many. The restaurant food is very good with the staff very friendly and polite. There is breakfast and an evening meal.
The surrounding area has other low rise hotels along the Avda. Josio Antonio Tavio with many supermarkets and bars but the area is not 'rocking' (in March at least although it was busy). I think that this is due to the fact that there is no real beach in Las Galletas or Costa del Silencio and so the area has reached its modest limits, perhaps thankfully so.
Let me say that again - there is NO BEACH near this hotel. For beaches (and more lively entertainment) you must head into Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas. The best way is to get the bus. 1.25euro single is magnificent value and here you will find smallish but good family beaches and entertainment. My advice is to initially hire a car from the airport (or before you go) to assess the area and then use the bus etc. Whichever way it is not a long trip around the southern end of the island.
So overall, I had a good relaxing holiday at this hotel and for the more pedestrian travellers it is good. If you have kids or are worried by noise from the thin walls then there may be better choices and if you are a party animal then head for Playa D L Am.
