Just returned from a week long stay at the Solana (July '12). 4 people stayed in a studio apartment on a B&B basis. Enjoyed our stay and would use this hotel again.
The studio apartment was large enough for 4, with 2 single beds and 2 single 'pull-out' type beds. The kitchen area (housed inside a cupboard) was useful for washing up and keeping things cold in the fridge, we didn't use it for any cooking though. Apartment was cleaned to a good standard, air conditioning worked well, not too much noise from the busy road outside once the balcony door was closed. No complaints with the room at all.
The buffet breakfast was okay. There were hot and cold choices available, but nothing of great quality or quantity. You had to pay extra for a decent cup of tea/coffee from the menu provided. We didn't eat in the hotel during the evening, so can't comment on the other food.
The lobby bar was a nice area, with comfy seating, Wi-Fi (after making a purchase from the bar), drinks and snacks available. The bar staff were a bit hit & miss, but no real issues. Drinks seemed to be fairly resonably priced.
Reception staff were always very helpful and friendly and happy to help with any questions.
The hotel pool seemed well kept and we didn't have any trouble getting sun-loungers before 11am. Shaded terrace area with seats is available outside of the snack bar upstairs from the pool. There is also an indoor pool and small gym which seemed well kept also.
The location of the hotel is on a steep hill and a very busy road, so if either of these things put you off, it may be worth looking elsewhere. For us, it was fine. A short bus ride/longish walk to a nice beach (Mellieha Bay) and easy to use the nearby bus stops to visit other places on the island.
If you are looking for a party atmosphere, look elsewhere (maybe St Julians) as Mellieha is quite sleepy and there's not a lot going on in the evening. There are a number of nice restaurants/bars around the hotel though. I can recommend Ta'Peter opposite the hotel and Purple/Bad*ss Burgers up the hill a little. Hilltop restaurant was disappointing and waited a very long time for service and food. There are also a supermarket, pharmacy, tour office and bakery near the hotel.
In summary, I thought the Solana was a nice and would recommend it.
