I have never written a hotel review in my life, but I feel compelled to tell my story about The Bavarian Inn in Bruce Mines. I am traveling across Canada back to the Kingston area of Ontario and landed at this shady hotel last night (Oct 14/11). I encountered friendly staff at the front desk and got the key to my room. I explained that I needed a room on the bottom floor as my dog had injured his foot earlier in the day and couldn't make it up the stairs, so they gave me a "nice" room. It took me quite a while to find the room in the first place, as it was the only room at the far end of the building and was in complete darkness. I couldn't see the number on the door. When I entered the room, I couldn't find a light switch and I was nervous about it being so dark. I should have left the room in darkness because when I found the light switch, I realized I was at the Bates Motel. There were at LEAST 4 flies buzzing around, a 1960's motive room with a mattress that old, a teeny tiny tv set, a dingy carpet, and a run-down bathroom. In the time it took me to bring in my stuff, my asthma started acting up and I realized I could not stay in the room. Something was wrong with the air.
I packed up my belongings and headed back to the office to give back the key. I was met by Sam the "manager" and a woman that has apparently worked there for 22 years. Upon explaining my situation to them, the manager refused to refund my money and continued to argue with me in an arrogant and rude manner, saying if I didn't like my room, why didn't I "immediately" come back? Keep in mind, by the time found the stupid room, unpacked, started to wheeze and repacked my car, about 20 minutes had passed. For this, he expected me to pay $113.00?????? Oh my God, I had stayed up the road at Carolyn's Beach Motor Inn 2 weeks prior for the same price and it was the Ritz compared to this dump.
The manager continued to refuse to refund my money so I asked him to dial the number for the police and they could handle it. I proceeded to my car to wait for them to arrive and while there, I saw the woman exit the office and check out a room (not my room), then return to the office. She then came out the door and told me to go inside. Once there, the "manager" started apologizing profusely, saying he was going to refund my money after learning that something was supposedly sprayed in the room. The woman said that yes, she checked out the room and she wouldn't be able to breathe in there either, that the cleaners must have sprayed air freshener or something. Funny, because the room she checked was NOT the one they gave me.
At this point, all I wanted was my money back. They called the police and said they were giving me a refund and I left. Had I backed down, I never would have gotten my money back. This is a shady operation with liars for staff and a manager who clearly knows how to manipulate people.
There are many other, nicer, cheaper, places to stay in the area. Keep on driving if you value your money and the integrity of others.
