I recently went on a 'Lunch Club' trip in South Goa and had a fabulous
day out. I have been to Goa a few times and have gone on the usual
excursions but this was a new kind of day trip and delightfully
different! I especially loved the whole day out because I am of
Portuguese ancestry myself.
We were picked up from where we were staying and taken to visit two
beautiful, old Portuguese houses, which were side by side so there was
no rushing around. It was all very relaxed. Afterwards, we went to a
lovely house (Palacio do Deao) which was built by a priest around 200
years ago. We were shown around by the owner, Ruben, who lives in the
palacio with his family. There, we had the most amazing lunch cooked
by his wife Celia which consisted of loads of different dishes , some
three or four being brought out at a time, and each one better than
the last! Starting off with delicious bite sized prawn rissoles and
ending with some fresh poached fish, this was a great way to have a
taste of many kinds of Goan-Portuguese food.
We booked the trip through KOKOindia, a travel company run by the
lovely Joanna who has lived in Goa for many years. Her company
specialises in ‘boutique experiences’ and are the only people
organising day trips like this from South Goa. It's only for small
groups and so it would be a great way to meet other nice people
staying in the area. I can't recommend the Lunch Club highly enough -
in fact I like it so much, I have asked Joanna to organise my trip to
Rajasthan next year!
