This is our really long and very detailed review of azul beach hotel and our wedding at azul beach. This hotel is better than advertised!
We arrived to Azul Beach at 1PM and were immediately greeted by Alberto. He ushered us to a seat in the lobby and brought us champagne and cold towels. I do not drink champagne so he went and got me a cold beer. Our room was ready immediately so he brought us there upon check in. At check in they also ask for your pillow and aroma type preferences, which is a nice touch. We opted for a private transfer from the airport because we didn’t want to wait for other guests. However, our wedding guests who took a shuttle did not have to wait more than 10 minute for their transfer. (We used Olympus Tours)
Hotel is located in Puerto Morelos, which is a town in the Mayan Riviera. The hotel is 15 minutes south of Cancun airport. The Mayan Riviera starts just south of Cancun and continues all the way to Tulum, which is about 90 miles and 1 hour and 40 minutes from start to finish. We were looking at Dreams Tulum and one reason we did not pick that hotel is the distance from the airport.
WHY AZUL BEACH?
- Distance from the Cancun airport as well as proximity to local area attractions (xelha, xcaret, Tulum, Cozumel, playa del Carmen)
-Small boutique hotel that caters to Families and Wedding parties. If you are looking to have your wedding at a hotel that is smaller and people in your party have children then this is perfect. We did not want a hotel where it was so large that our guests never could find each other. Azul was small enough where everyone could find each other but large enough where the other wedding parties could have their own areas to hang out. The other benefit of Azul Beach is that its sister property Azul Sensatori is down the street so they have the ability to offer more variety in terms of wedding cakes, flowers, cleaning services etc.
The entire hotel is beautiful. Manicured trees and grass. It is so picturesque. Everywhere you turn is another photo opp. They even have little sand molds that say Azul and put it in the freshly raked sand each morning.
Azul Beach recently went through a renovation and now has 147 rooms. The “old” part of the hotel is all deluxe rooms. While some people have said they were not happy with these rooms, they are typical rooms in Mexico. Clean, comfortable, marble floors and nice bathrooms. They are on the smaller side but all have nice patios and some face the ocean.
There are 9 Sections that are called Villas. Villas 1-6 are the “old” part of the hotel and contain only deluxe rooms. If you are staring at the hotel from the beach then Villas 1,2,3 are on the furthest side left (south side of resort) and these are the quietest deluxe rooms. We highly recommend these villas for people who are worried about noise and are looking for a deluxe room. Villa 4 is right off the lobby and faces into a courtyard around villas 1,2,3. Villas 5 and 6 are perpendicular to the main pool and the aquaknox bar. If you wan to be right on top of the action or don’t mind a little noise, then these villas are a better option. In reading previous reviews when people complain about noise, this is why. You can hear the nightly beach activities if you are on villas 5 and 6 but it was never too disruptive and always quiet by 11PM.
If you are deciding if it’s worth it to upgrade to a suite or swim up; DO IT. The rooms are big, modern, open and beautiful.
Villas 7 and 8 face the ocean with partial ocean views. Both of these villas are two floors and the main floor is all swim up suites while the second floor are premier suites. These are the two best villas if you have a family or are with a small group. You are right on top of a small pool plus have access to your swim up pool.
Villa 9: This was our Favorite villa. There are three floors and we had most of our wedding guests here. It is towards the back corner of the property and perfect for groups. There is a swim up bar directly across from villas 901/902 and all our guests hung out around this bar with its lounge chairs and beach beds. If you are planning a wedding here, I would request to have as many rooms in villa 9 and 10 as possible. Villa 10 is adjacent to villa 9 and towards the back of the property. Villa 11 is right next door to that. All suites in villas 9,10, and 11 on the ground floor are swim ups and then all suites on the 2nd and 3rd floor are family suites. However they have the same exact layout, which is a large open bathroom with rain shower, double vanity, bedroom with sliding door to separate a living room with TV. All rooms have great balconies and Jacuzzi tubs. Fridge comes stocked with soda and beer.
Overall, I would recommend upgrading to villas (sections) 7-11 but you will be happy with villas (sections) 1-6 as long as your expectations are of a typical Mexican hotel room.
Helpful hints: Some rooms don’t have full-length mirrors. All rooms have hair dryers, dvd players, iPod players and a safe.
Wedding Recommendation: Congregate around the villa 9 swim up bar and arrange ahead of time with your coordinator to have some snacks delivered to the pool in the afternoon. Our guests loved this.
All beaches in the Mayan Riviera are not as nice as the beaches in Cancun. We have been to Mayan Riviera, Cancun, Acapulco and Puerto Vallarta and the beach at Azul falls somewhere in the middle. There is about 20 feet of sand and the water can be a little murky when it’s rainy out. Seaweed washes up on the beach but they go out of their way to clean it up. The water is still bright blue and feels like bath water. Don’t expect a Cancun beach but overall its still very nice.
Beach Beds: There are beach beds available based on a lottery system. You have to put your name and room number down the day before by 2PM and they let you know the next day if you got one. Most people did not have problems getting one since we went for our wedding at the end of may but be aware its not guaranteed. Our guests loved the pool as well so this was never a big deal. Every day there is beach volleyball, yoga, and pool aerobics. There is a small swing set for children.
Oh the food! Our family is in the restaurant business in New York and we have been privileged to dine all around the world. Our previous expectations of an all-inclusive have been very low. Azul beach exceeded our expectations. Their gourmet all-inclusive plan is wonderful and they really go out of their way to provide a great experience to their guests. Was it the best food in the world; no. However, it is better than most restaurants and easily the best all-inclusive we have ever had. Being a small property allowed the hotel to prepare food in small batches to it always tasted like it was made for you.
Breakfast: There is a buffet each morning at the main restaurant Blue Terrace. When you sit down they pour you orange juice and coffee and then you have a choice of ordering off a menu and being served OR getting the buffet. If you are in a hurry or don’t like lounging around during a meal, I would opt for the buffet. The buffet was excellent. Made to order omelets, CRISPY bacon, great assortment of yogurt, oatmeal, breads and fruits.
Lunch: You can eat lunch at chill restaurant, which has amazing seafood ceviches, along with simple pizzas, burgers, and sandwiches.
There is a beach bbq on busier days as well as a sit down lunch at blue terrace. We were a fan of chil since it was right on the water and service was faster.
Room Service: had a good menu and came quickly. Quesadillas, pizza, burgers, salads. Not amazing assortment of choices, but always good.
Dinners: restaurants close on different days and weddings take over blue terrace frequently.
BLUE TERRACE: We had a dinner for our group who arrived early and it was a sit down dinner with a set menu. Food was really good (steak, fish, chicken) and it was nice that they made a private dinner for us.
For dinner, blue terrace typically offers 5 types of menus ranging from Mexican, vegetarian, lobster and other varieties. A note about the lobster menu: It’s not all you can eat 2-pound main lobsters. Its more like lobster bisque, lobster ravioli, lobster risotto so come into it with those expectations.
ROMA: Most popular, Italian food, great menu of pastas (fettuccini alfredo, Bolognese’s, pomodoro), osso buco and other specialties.
LATINO: great dessert of churros, Mexican hot chocolate. Appetizer platters of empanadas and taquitos
TAINAN: Asian inspired menu with Sushi, noodle dishes, sake for sale.
La Mancha: great smoothies and fast sandwiches. Great if you are in a hurry and don’t want to miss a second in the pool!
All the restaurants were very good. Service can be spotty at times (with large groups) so be patient with large parties.
A note about allergies: The chef (LUIS) is very flexible and accommodating with allergies. Just let them know when you arrive and they can have pre done meals for you at any time. He personally met each person with an allergy and was sure to accommodate him or her.
Don’t leave without trying: stuffed French toast (blue terrace), mushroom soup (roma), ceviche (chil), beef tenderloin (blue terrace), chilaquiles (blue terrace)
Wedding food: excellent! (See “wedding” for review)
This hotel has better service then I could have ever imagined. The waiters are very good (get a little overwhelmed with large parties), but service is excellent. My mom is a bit particular about her wine and Ernesto went out of his way each night to put a bottle of her liking next to her at dinner each night.
Bartenders are fantastic. Made drinks I never even knew existed. While sitting in the pool, I ordered a drink and was no more than 5 feet from the bar. The bartender made my drink and walked from behind the bar all the way around to where I was sitting so I wouldn’t have to move to get my drink! Now that’s service!
The fact that the hotel put up with our wedding guests demands is huge. We had guests from the age of 1 all the way up to grandmothers and each and every person was delighted. We had a few guests in particular who are known to be “complainers” about EVERYTHING, and even those guests gave the resort a “10 out of 10” and we didn’t hear them complain about a single thing.
Each room had a different experience, but some rooms got different towel arrangements, some had fragrances. Ours had rose petals almost every night. One night our bath was made for us with bubbles and rose petals. Our room was always clean. I swear they came in every time we left to clean! The water bottles were all over our room; by the sink, by the bed, by the coffee maker, on our table. Never a shortage. The refrigerator was always replenished. I don’t recommend doing this, but I left out my wedding jewelry for about 4 days (because I kept forgetting to put it back in the safe) and the maid always had it nicely set out and covered up. At most hotels, that jewelry would have gone missing. Thanks Celia!
ALL employees had excellent service, but the following employees were beyond excellent: Israel, Reuben, Edgar, Jorge, Ernesto, Luis, Wilbur, Grecia, Oscar, Alberto, Leo, Rocio, Lorena
NEW! It has everything one could want in a hotel fitness center. Only 2 treadmills though, so sometimes a wait on those (but you can just go for a run on the beach instead). All equipment is new.
Note: treadmills are in kilometers!
Really good services. Most of our wedding guests got massages and said it was the best massage they have ever gotten (and I agree!). Your massage is over the ocean and masseuse is very good with how much pressure you want (or don’t want).
I got my hair done and my MOH hair in up-do for the wedding. Both of our hair turned out beautiful. My hair stylist had been working for 12 years (at other hotels included). I gave her 2 photos to go by, and she combined them perfectly. (Ask for Lorena!)
My MOH got her makeup done at the salon and it was beautiful.
I got my nails done and they really did a great job. One of the best pedicures I have ever had. (Ask for Rocio)
Bring money for tipping. Bugs weren’t bad when we were there, but bring bug repellent. Dress code for dinners: nice (you can wear khaki shorts). It is a kid friendly resort.
We don’t have kids, but some of our guests did and had a very positive experience with azulitos and babysitters. We saw the azulitos kids group here and there and all the kids seemed to be very happy!
There is the main pool by aquanox and then 2 other pools on either side of it. Towards villas 7-11, there are about 4 other pool areas (one of them by villa 9, having a swim up bar). This was very nice because our wedding group was a bit rowdy and hung out at villa 9 without disturbing other guests. Pools are VERY clean.
SO much fun. The bartenders are excellent and made us so many fun drinks. The tequila bar DOES have more than just tequila. You should definitely try the tequilas though. We turned many of our guests into tequila lovers after tasting good tequila.
Very good entertainment planned each night. Don’t miss the fire show!!!
I don’t even know where to start on this. IF you are deciding to book your wedding at Azul beach, just call them now and book it. That is how beyond our expectations good Azul beach is at weddings. Every worker at the resort knew whom we were by name and genuinely cared about our thoughts and if our guests were happy.
Facts about our wedding: 110 guests, ages 1-80, from all over US (mainly NY).
Wedding coordinators in Miami: this is a nice touch because most hotels don't give you people to speak with beforehand.
Wedding coordinators on site: Janet, Barbara, and Tania. All 3 were very organized and accommodating. They fulfilled every request we had.
We had a private dinner, which was very nice with 35 people. The hotel made beautiful menus and had a set menu for this event. Was very nice.
We did the romantic dinner on the beach and it was beautiful. Definitely do it!
Rehearsal dinner: we had it on the beach. Beach bbq. Buffett style and food was very good. We had the donkey for the first hour and it was a big hit! We had a bonfire with marshmellos for the last 2 hours (which guests also enjoyed). They had 1 bar with 2 bartenders (who were fast enough to accommodate everyone!). Highly recommend this for rehearsal dinner! The setup was very nice. We didn’t ask for any decorations for this, and they were not needed. The beach is beautiful enough. This part is set up where they usually hold volleyball (they take down the net).
Ceremony: we did ours on the beach. We were nervous that we wouldn’t all fit, but it ended up working out very nicely. We chose the fully decorated package with flowers and bows, and it was beautiful. The minister did speak English, which was good. We had one of our guests’ do most of the ceremony and that was a nice touch because it was more personal. Sand ceremony was nice and we now have a pretty bottle to remember our wedding!
Cocktail hour: we did it on the sky deck. Absolutely beautiful. They set up standing tables and had food passed around as well as sitting on some tables. We paid extra to have 2 bars, which worked out nicely for a group of our size. We got the trio of singers and they were fantastic. Worth it! We didn’t do any extra decorations here, and it was not needed.
Reception: we did it in the ballroom. We were nervous that we would not all fit, but it was a perfect fit. We had 11 tables, 1 bar, a DJ, and the dance floor inside. We had another bar and a photo booth outside in the hallway. The room looked very nice. We got chair covers (because the ballroom chairs are blue!). We opted for flowers on each table and they were really beautiful.
Other: we got all “basic” flowers and they were beautiful.
Food: a lot of my guests said it was the best “wedding food” they had ever had. Whatever package you get, definitely ask for the trio of ceviches. It was delicious. We had lobster, surf n turf, and rack of lamb and everyone seemed to enjoy each one. I didn’t get to try the dessert, but heard it was good. The cake was beautiful and exactly what I had asked for. It tasted good as well.
DJ: we had dj all music and he played all of the songs on our playlist (even the very hard to find ones) and one song that we had remixed for us and sent him a link to. We also had a performer that had certain requests for the DJ and the DJ did everything he needed.
Photographer: we used an outside photographer. Photos in Cancun. It is worth the outside vendor fee. These will be your pictures for life. Photos in Cancun sends 2 photographers and exceeded our expectations.
Tips: they do not provide table numbers or table number stands.
