“Two Hotels - from misery to a pretty good experience”

Two hotels, but not as the other review implied.
I am referring to the hotel during the weekends and then during the week. TWO completely different experiences. The weekends should be avoided at all cost. The weekends at this hotel means: A 3-1 child to adult ratio – the screaming never ends! Crowds everywhere – from check in, to the restaurants, to the pool – everywhere. Mondays – Thursday are nice and one really gets to enjoy the property and the great beaches. Basically this place operated well when capacity is at 50%. When, full it is a nightmare.

We arrived on a Saturday and already the lobby had lines and kids running around every were. Literally bus loads of people were being dropped off in addition to all the people that had driven in for the weekend. Check in was time consuming as there were 3 people checking people in and out. The room was not ready until 4 PM. Keep this in mind if you are arriving early. You will not get your room before 3PM – a trend I noticed continued for the next several days.

While waiting for our room we decided to have a little lunch. All that was available at the time was the snack bar near the pool. Typical all inclusive food, everything is cooked on the same grill pan. The guacamole was good and they managed to have a goods selection of fruits and vegetable. Kids however have not understood the concept of tongs and lines, so cutting and using hands to reach in and grab was common.

After finally checking in we went to the pools to find them just overwhelmed with children of all ages. The chairs around the pool were filled with severely overweight people and elderly women/men (70+) in swimsuits. Large Mexican families had overrun the hotel.

At the pool, the music was super loud and the guy on the mic had an ability to consistently be on it, leading some sort of dance and or /aerobic activity.

To wrap up the horrible day, we went to the Mexican restaurant at 9:15 PM (it closes at 10:30 PM supposedly). We were advised the last sitting was at 9:00PM and our only option was the buffet… the buffet is suitable for breakfast and lunch, but at night it is as depressing as prison cafeteria with mobs of people fighting for food, cutting in line trying to feed large familys. The lights are very bright and the place overwhelmingly loud - not in any way a nice place to enjoy dinner. (If you have no options pack a to-go plate and have dinner on your balcony) Needless to say our first dinner was in the town of Puerto Morelos. The other restaurant on the property were full and closing early as well

The next morning I desperately tried to book somewhere else but with no luck. However after going down to the beach/pool area noticed that all was more calm. From here on out the hotel got a little better and that Sunday, Monday and Tuesday were increasingly pleasant. The positive reviews about this hotel all apply for the slower days.

Basically, AVOID the weekends. IT IS HELL. In some many ways

Quickies:
THE BEDS are springy and loud. The double beds are small and two average sizes adults don’t fit well. I am 5’9, 165 and my girlfriend in 5’2, 110 pounds and it was tight. No king size rooms were available at check in

The shower leaks water everywhere, which is annoying.

There are no non-smoking rooms,

The house wine is nauseating. The beer is good.

The minibar is always well stocked with water, beer and assorted beverages

The property is very nice and well maintained.

My wife and I work for an airline and booked this through a interline agency that works with passengers in the travel industry. That said, we paid 130 a night AI for our 4 night stay at the Ocean Coral/Turquesa. We have both stayed in the hotel zone of Cancun 4 or 5 times. Getting to Puerto Morelos is a little different. It cost 60.00 usd for myself, wife and infant son to get a taxi to the Ocean Coral. It was only 27.00 for the return trip. As I've read with many of the reviews, do not stop to talk to the timeshare/tour salespeople that are between you and the outside air. One guy said we should go over to find out the name of our taxi driver. Bzzzzzz. Don't think so. At check in we asked if we could get a Jacuzzi room. Sorry not available. I asked about an Ocean view and was told all of the rooms overlook the ocean. This is partially true, in that we could partially see the ocean. The VIP rooms have a full view of the ocean and I can't expect that at the price we paid. We had our young son with us so we were given a room on the north side of the property by the tennis courts. This was good as it was close to the Family pool/Kids area. It was a walk to the center of the property where you eat at the restaurants. We didn't find out why, but one night somebody up the shore was burning something, maybe seaweed I don't know, and it woke us up at 2am in the room. By 5a it was really bad. We should have asked about it, but it didn't happen again. It would have been nice if the management would have mentioned it. One thing to take note is there is little to no shade at the pools. If you go with kids, and it is a kid friendly place, plan on lots of sunblock. It was not too full during our stay. We had no difficulty getting lounge chairs at all. The booze is mostly well liquor. Names you don't really know. During our initial tour to buy into the h10 property, one of the sales guys said they know it's not up to standard but they are working on it. We didn't sign up but in the sales room upstairs, they did have more of the bottom to middle shelf booze available. Our room was nice enough, but the king size bed was not all that comfortable. The room was clean and the maid service was top notch. The mini bar came with some real cokes, a sprite or two and some bottled water. A couple of Mexican beers were included, but again probably ones you wouldn't know. I had one that I didn't care for, and the next day a Modelo appeared. It was drinkable at least but not my favorite. Since our son was with us, we weren't looking to drink alot, but when we did have a drink we would prefer a better brand, Mexican or International. Food is average but more of a variety than I had read about in other reviews. With our son, we were up earlier rather than later and ate earlier for all our meals. Our experience may have been better than others because we were there usually at the opening of the the buffet/restaurant doors. We ate at all 3 theme restaraunts. We liked the Japanese and Italian, the Mexican was just ok. Service at all was quite good, even the buffet. The sports bar never was open while we were up, so we didn't eat there. It opened at 11p we heard. The shashimi at the Japanese place was well prepared, but mostly cream cheese with a hint of tuna or salmon. The first day we were excited but by the end of our stay we were finding faults more than anything. We probably would not go back, although the mid level sales guy said the h10 property in Punta Cana was way better than here. The 4 pools are very nice, but only one of them has a swim up bar. Basically this a new place and it shows. If we had paid the normal going rate, we would have been unable to overlook many of the flaws here. If it's a premium and or luxury place, I would expect luxury food and drinks to go along.

H10 Ocean Turquesa

This was my third trip to Mexico and everything at the Ocean Turquesa was great. Booked a couple days before leaving using SellOff vacations and flew with Air Transat. Our flight was delayed 2 hours leaving Halifax due to weather in Orlando, but we didn't mind since it was an evening flight. Everything about the trip was great, although I will not travel Air Transat again if I don't have too. The plane was crowded with no leg room and the food was bad. We went with Westjet and Sunquest before and I would much rather fly with them.
Arrived at the resort around midnight and checked in right away. Our room was very tastefully decorated and spacious. Others have complained of a musty smell and while there was a bit of a smell I have encountered this at every resort I have stayed at. It was nothing that we couldn't handle or even noticed after about 15 minutes. Food was ok, breakfast was easily the best meal of the day. We did try out some a la carte's, the Japense and Italian were both great. We also ate at the Sports bar one night and it was ok. Make sure you stop by the Coffee Shop for Iced Coffee and the Strawberry Cheesecake! You do not have to make reservations for the a la carte's, just show up and they will let you know when a table will be available. Other reviews thought this was a horrible set up but we enjoyed it and never had to wait. For lunch try the pizza at the snack bar by the children's club. We didn't discover this until our last day, which is too bad because it was the best lunch we had during the week.
The pools are great and there was always lots of chairs available. The beach is the nicest that I have stayed at in Mexico, they won't compare to the ones of Punta Cana, but who cares when you have sunshine, waiter service and 30 degree weather.
Service at the resort was great, all employees were friendly and tried their best to understand you. Almost all of the staff we talked to knew enough english to have a conversation with.
We went to Playa del Carmen twice and took the ferry to Cozumel. Once on Cozumel we rented a scooter and toured the island. Anyone going to Cozumel should do this, it was fantastic! You can take a cab from the resort to Playa for $30 or you can take a cab from the resort to Puerto Morelas for $9 and then take the bus from there for another $1.80. You can also walk down the beach to Puerto Morelas, about a 50 minute walk and then go to the bus station.
Entertainment at the resort was ok, make sure you go the Circus show it was impressive.
After a week I wasn't ready to come home and would have loved to have stayed longer.

“A definate 4 but could easily be a 5!”

H10 Ocean Turquesa

We (4 women early 50's) stayed at this resort from April 11 to April 18 and had a wonderful week but there are a few things that need mentioning as they may bother some travellers.

Check-in: We checked in on the evening of April 11th. Greeted in the beautiful lobby with Champaign! It went smoothly and we were granted all of our requests which we made when booking our trip (2nd floor, 2 beds, side by side rooms).

Rooms: The rooms are beautifully decorated and we had no issues with the shower, as previously mentioned in other reviews. The bathrooms were probably designed by a Eurpean as there is no main door and a window looking out on to the junior suite. This resort claims to be family friendly...but this is a little too friendly especially if you are a modest person travelling with friends or teenage children (the design is fine for couples)!

Food: The food was great. Lots of choices at the buffet, Pool/Bar Restaurant and Sports Bar. Loved Mike's Coffee Shop. It was like having your own private Tim Horton's. A great place for mid-afternoon coffee and sweets.

A La Carte Restaurants: 1 star for this aspect of the resort - it is one area of the hotel that really needs improvement. There is no reservation system in place. First come first serve which caused major wait times. Also, they rotated closing one A La Carte each evening as we were told that it was the low season. I've never heard of a "low season" until May. There are only 3 A la Carte restaurants...usually 5 with a 5 star...and we only got to dine in two. We think the resort was only about 70% capacity so they may have laid off some of the service staff.

Entertainment: The entertainment staff were around the pools most of the day and people seemed to enjoy them. There was little or no entertainment at night and there was confusion about the location of the shows. On some evenings the program indicated the show would be in the lobby. By the time you found out it was in the theatre, it was over. For young people, there is no disco at this resort so therefore, if you wanted late night entertainment you had to take the shuttle to Cancun which didn't return until 4:00 a.m. This resort does not have 24 hour bar service as most AI do.

Bar Service - these areas of the resort seem to be understaffed. I can only imagine that if the hotel was full, getting a drink may be a nightmare! The bar staff are very friendly and try hard though.

Beach - breathtaking.

I would definately return to this resort but would not expect to pay for a 5 star unless some changes are made.

“Loved the H10”

H10 Ocean Turquesa

I just got back on the 19th...I miss Mexico so much...lol This review is based on my experiences @ the H10 Coral/Turquesa

Check in
Check in was very fast (less than 5 min), and we enjoyed the Coronas while we waited. We stayed in room 11303 on the Coral side...very nice…We paid for the Turquesa side (Less expensive) and they upgraded us for free. We were given 2 room cards, 4 towel cards, and the safe lock/key.

Room
A welcome letter & gift (local candies, maracas etc) were in our room when we first arrived. We had a beautiful room over looking the swim-up bar pool, and the ocean. The patio was huge.
The room was kept very clean all week, lots of clean towels everyday.
No water issue in my shower, they installed a sweep on the bottom & side of the shower.

They also installed a blind over the tub, so the people outside can’t see your junk when you’re in the bath…Mini fridge was always topped up with lots of beer, water, and pop…

Pools/beach
Always lots of pool/beach chairs, and most days there were even a few sun beds free...The pools were cleaned everyday, and the decks were kept tidy throughout the day.

Beach was great, I think I figured out the how the beach works in relation to the resort names…The Coral side of the resort has more Coral on the beach (imagine that lol)…and the Turquesa side had less coral on it…

Bar service
Bar service was fast, Pool side service was fast and very friendly, Beach service was also very good.

Those guys worked their butts off everyday (with a smile), and deserve all of the tips they get.

Try the frozen Gin Fizz…This was my favorite, next to the Corona. I never once had to drink from a small plastic cup, only the large plastic ones....and mostly drank from real glasses...

Eats
Food was great in the a la carts (Italian was our favorite, try the mushroom risotto and the beef), Sports Bars was good for those late night feedings after a few drinks...Pool Grill has the best lunch (IMO) always hot and fresh...Buffet for breakfast was good, I didn't eat there for any other meals. Mikes Coffee was freaking awesome, I had Ice Caps (frozen coffee) in the day, and great tea, coffee & sweets in the evening. I never went hungry; I even gained weight…lol

Shows

The shows were lots of fun, lots of audience participation.
My buddy and I were in two different shows…lol…I was a horse in one of the plays, and I also won 2nd place in a Mr. Macho Mexico contest…
lol…Great times, I just hope I don’t end up on You Tube. The best show was when a Circ de Soleil type of act from Cancun performed. Really cool show.

Overall

This was a gorgeous resort with beautiful landscaping. Lots of hard working people here, willing to do whatever it takes to make your vacation really special.

I have not one bad thing to say about this resort...everything I asked for was given to me by Guest Services...We even had a free late checkout (until 5pm)...we left the resort @ 5:50pm...not too bad I'd say.

Anyone going should join the H10 Club and email Guest Services before you go with any questions or special requests...They took really good care of us all week...truly a 5 star resort...
