Two hotels, but not as the other review implied.
I am referring to the hotel during the weekends and then during the week. TWO completely different experiences. The weekends should be avoided at all cost. The weekends at this hotel means: A 3-1 child to adult ratio – the screaming never ends! Crowds everywhere – from check in, to the restaurants, to the pool – everywhere. Mondays – Thursday are nice and one really gets to enjoy the property and the great beaches. Basically this place operated well when capacity is at 50%. When, full it is a nightmare.
We arrived on a Saturday and already the lobby had lines and kids running around every were. Literally bus loads of people were being dropped off in addition to all the people that had driven in for the weekend. Check in was time consuming as there were 3 people checking people in and out. The room was not ready until 4 PM. Keep this in mind if you are arriving early. You will not get your room before 3PM – a trend I noticed continued for the next several days.
While waiting for our room we decided to have a little lunch. All that was available at the time was the snack bar near the pool. Typical all inclusive food, everything is cooked on the same grill pan. The guacamole was good and they managed to have a goods selection of fruits and vegetable. Kids however have not understood the concept of tongs and lines, so cutting and using hands to reach in and grab was common.
After finally checking in we went to the pools to find them just overwhelmed with children of all ages. The chairs around the pool were filled with severely overweight people and elderly women/men (70+) in swimsuits. Large Mexican families had overrun the hotel.
At the pool, the music was super loud and the guy on the mic had an ability to consistently be on it, leading some sort of dance and or /aerobic activity.
To wrap up the horrible day, we went to the Mexican restaurant at 9:15 PM (it closes at 10:30 PM supposedly). We were advised the last sitting was at 9:00PM and our only option was the buffet… the buffet is suitable for breakfast and lunch, but at night it is as depressing as prison cafeteria with mobs of people fighting for food, cutting in line trying to feed large familys. The lights are very bright and the place overwhelmingly loud - not in any way a nice place to enjoy dinner. (If you have no options pack a to-go plate and have dinner on your balcony) Needless to say our first dinner was in the town of Puerto Morelos. The other restaurant on the property were full and closing early as well
The next morning I desperately tried to book somewhere else but with no luck. However after going down to the beach/pool area noticed that all was more calm. From here on out the hotel got a little better and that Sunday, Monday and Tuesday were increasingly pleasant. The positive reviews about this hotel all apply for the slower days.
Basically, AVOID the weekends. IT IS HELL. In some many ways
Quickies:
THE BEDS are springy and loud. The double beds are small and two average sizes adults don’t fit well. I am 5’9, 165 and my girlfriend in 5’2, 110 pounds and it was tight. No king size rooms were available at check in
The shower leaks water everywhere, which is annoying.
There are no non-smoking rooms,
The house wine is nauseating. The beer is good.
The minibar is always well stocked with water, beer and assorted beverages
The property is very nice and well maintained.
