DH and I had to take an unexpected trip to Trinidad for a relative’s funeral. We’d previously stayed at Chaconia in Maraval, but on a Trip Advisor search not too long ago I ran across L’Orchidee and the fabulous reviews it got on TA, and decided that on our next trip we’d spend a bit extra and try them. Online checks showed that the hotel was sold out for the time period we wanted, but I decided to make a phone call anyway, and was able to get us a room. We arrived on April 13 for 5 nights.
We’d stayed in Maraval on previous visits, and the traffic could be a bear at times. L’Orchidee’s location in St Ann’s was a few miles off the Savannah route and was perfect. The area was quiet and clean.
L’Orchidee’s staff could not be nicer or more helpful. Christine and Koya always had a smile and were willing to get plates and cutlery for our takeout dinners that we brought back to our room. A couple times we had to use the microwave to warm up our dinners, and we once again had service with a smile. At breakfast, the chef always came out to see if we wanted anything else.
We were placed in room 2 – near to the lobby. We actually liked the location and didn’t find it noisy at all, although another reviewer had mentioned that rooms near reception had some noise due to late arrivals. We heard one early am departure, but no late arrivals. We liked the fact that we didn’t have to climb stairs and once we left our room within a few steps we were at the breakfast buffet, front desk or front door.
Our room had hardwood floors, queen bed, a dresser, two night stands, a table, two chairs, closet, TV and TV stand. A nice surprise was a mini-fridge. We weren't expecting one, so we were very pleased. Staff provided us with ice daily and we bought our sodas and juice from Hi-Lo. Our bathroom was spotless and we always received the extra towels we’d requested on the first day. Our a/c unit worked perfectly and was not too loud. In hot Trinidad, you’ll quickly learn to appreciate a well-functioning a/c unit!
Breakfast each day was perfectly fine. There was always fresh juice and milk as well as a cereal, breakfast breads, fresh fruit, bread for toast, pastry, sausage, eggs, vegetarian options and a local dish like tomato choka or brule jol.
Guest keys were handed over before leaving each day, the front door was locked during the day and at night there was a guard opening the gate. We always felt secure. The windows in our room had burglar bars (par for the course in Trinidad) even in safer areas.
Having experienced the hospitality at L’Orchidee, I can’t think of choosing any place else in Trinidad – except maybe the Hyatt, that friends rave about! That will be another trip with a larger budget!
Things to Do/Places to Eat
Most of our time on this trip was devoted to dealing with the funeral arrangements but we squeezed in half a day at Maracas! I hadn't been to Maracas in almost 22 years, so I was very pleased with all the amenities now offered including clean changing rooms, chairs for rent and lots of food options. The water was still as rough as I remembered, so we chilled in the shade and people-watched.
We love Trinidad Chinese food and this time we found a new restaurant - Kam Wah (near the TTT building). We previously enjoyed the Chinese at Jenny on the Boulevard, but didn't this time because we'd heard quality had dropped. We got takeout from Relish restaurant on Sunday. I was disappointed in the new soup restaurant on Tragarete Road that I tried. We always enjoy lunch at the Town Center Mall food court on Frederick Street, so we ate there twice. The food court had lots of tasty Trini food options that make it hard to choose.
I've mentioned it before in prior reviews, but will reiterate it here - I highly recommend getting a driver in Trinidad. Our driver (same person as our 2011 trip) was always on time, was pleasant, had great advice on places to eat and could strategize with us on best routes in order to get all the business we had to get done, completed. You couldn't pay me to drive in Trinidad traffic! Traffic congestion is a way of life, roads are in disrepair and are extremely narrow and drivers aggressive.
Safe, happy travels, everyone. If you found this review helpful, please click “yes” below. Thank you!
