We were pleasantly surpised to find such a comfortable hotel in the heart of Sydney at very reasonable rates.
The room was basic but very clean and had everything we needed to make our stay comfortable. We especially loved the shower!!!
There was a full choice of breakfasts in the little cafe downstairs.
George was extremely helpful with advice on bus routes etc.
We would definitely recommend this hotel and hope to return at some future date.

For the price, $100 AUD, this hotel was terrific. It was an interesting location and just 2 blocks from the subway station. George makes a nice breakfast and there are 2 laundromats nearby, once next door and one across the street. We also found it far enough away from the partiers to be quiet.
Thumbs up!

“Great value good location”

Stayed here on our last 3 nights in Australia before moving on to NZ. Great value B&B. Rooms are small and reminded us of London type B&Bs with random furniture. George "the owner" is very "laconic" but has a dry sense of humour once he opens up! The plus points for this place are cost, location and I would rate the breakfasts (with a great selection) as one of the best in our 3 month trip. The Kings Cross area has a bit of a reputation and although we saw a few undesirables we never felt threatened and enjoyed the buzz of the nightlife. Its not 5* but you are not paying 5* prices so if you are looking for somewhere covenient to get your heads down and explore the city then this is as good as anywhere.

If you want an inexpensive place to stay, that's comfortable, with a good breakfast and close to the city, Hotel 59 ticks all the boxes. On top of that, however, you also get the benefit of the ever helpful owner, George.
As others have said, Hotel 59 is close to, but not actually in, the lively part of Kings Cross. It's about a 30-minute walk from Circular Quay, and for a city location, it's quite quiet. We stayed during the week, so it may be a bit noisier at the weekend.
Rooms are spacious enough, and comfortable. They are clearly not 5 Star, but then neither are the prices.
For breakfast in the cafe downstairs, you get a choice of 1 item from the breakfast menu, plus a drink. This was much better than it sounds: The muesli, for instance, consists of a large bowl of cereal, with yoghurt, honey and banana, and really set you up for the day. There's a wide range of cooked options as well.
We were very happy with our stay at Hotel 59, and would recommend it to anyone looking for a conveniently situated B&B.

“great hotel, perfect spot”

Hotel 59

Hotel 59 was a complete surprise...(stayed mar 28 to apr 03 2008)
Perfect quiet location, close to bus stop, take-away food places and nightlife. Its the quiet residential end of Bayswater Rd in Kings Cross.
Only a 10 min walk to Darlinghurst Rd/Kings Cross clubs, 15 mins to Oxford St precinct and 30min pleasant walk to Opera House & CBD.
Host-George met me at the front door as i got out of the taxi, he was very welcoming and helpful. Lots of brochures and info available in the foyer for tourists.
Breakfast is included in the room rate and is served downstairs in the cosy streetside cafe, great coffee and very delicious meals.
Outdoor tables just outside cafe are perfect for enjoying Sydney's mild weather. The cafe is very popular with the locals- always a good sign.
The room was impeccably clean, the mattress firm and comfortable and the sheets crisp and clean.
Lots of good storage spaces and hanging robe are provided as well as colour tv and air con.
The en suite bathroom is small but just the right size. The shower was hot and invigorating.
The room was serviced everyday and a do-not-disturb sign is provided for those who had late nights on the town ( guilty as charged).
George always greeted me with a smile and was very helpful with info and directions for sightseeing.
The thai takeaway shop next door is great, fresh food and cheap prices.
Hotel 59 is a hidden gem with a bargain price.
Family run, clean, quiet and welcoming..why stay in a cold soul less Hilton for twice the price.
I stayed there on the basis of the reviews I had read here and Im more than happy to add to them.
I look forward to my next Sydney visit and my next stay at Hotel 59
