“Loved Woolloomooloo”

Mariners Court Hotel

9 May 2008

Got off to an interesting start when I arrived with a bout of gastro - luckily there is a doctor right next door to this hotel! It was such comfort to be able to see someone straight away. The hotel itself has a fantastic, healthy free breakfast and the rooftop area is brilliant for catching some sun and having a read in the morning. The room itself is average sized, small televisions but hey, that's not what you're in a new city for is it. Every room has a small balcony which an absolute rarity in modest priced hotels these days. The bathrooms could possibly do with a renovation but they are clean enough. The location is brilliant, the opera house/circular quay/harbour bridge is an easy and pretty 20 minute walk through the botanical gardens. Kings Cross also at your doorstep for those who enjoy a bit of nightlife and excellent food on nearby Victoria Street!

We stayed here for three nights towards the end of February.

Our room was acceptable, with fridge, tea & coffee making facilities, air con & a fan. There was a tiny balcony but we couldn't open the door! The view was not exciting anyway, but it was peaceful - no traffic noise.

The bathroom was pretty tired and in need of a refit or at least a good clean, but it was functional.

Breakfast was good, though 'non chinese' guests were not allowed to try the chinese style breakfast which was a pity because it looked interesting!

The staff were very helpful on check-in & check-out and we did not need them at any other time.

The walk to the city centre through the botanical gardens is quite delightful, but tiring later on after a day sight seeing. we tried to catch a bus one day but the traffic was so heavy it took for ever. We walked back late at night on one occasion and I felt slightly uneasy, though we were fine.On another occasion we walked to the Kings Cross Train station which wasn't far.

There are several restaurants close by, and on our last night we stumbled upon Potts Point which also had god restaurants and a good atmoshpere, we would have liked to have returned there.

All in all this hotel is fantastic value for money being MUCH cheaper than most.

We would probably stay here again.

“Ready for a nursing home yet?”

The main problem with this hotel is the atmosphere - it's a former nursing home that the current owner/s haven't spent a lot of money converting to a hotel. It's very "beige", with wide doors and corridors for wheelchairs and trolleys, and emergency buttons still in the rooms and showers. The pictures on the walls reminded me of a doctor's waiting room. If you look closely, you can see the rear entrance where the ambulances would collect/drop off patients/
residents. I read on a website it's a "heritage" building - but it looked 1970s/80s to me.

The staff were OK - quite helpful and friendly - but not really apologetic that our booking was mucked up (at their end) - which meant we had to move rooms. One room was OK but the next had a hairdryer that didn't work and a door that only locked from the outside. The rooms were clean enough, but the bathrooms looked a bit tired and the shower tiles needed a good scrub.

We were there in late summer and the place was pretty airless and stuffy. There is aircon and fans. You could open the doors to get air, but every night but one there seemed to be guests smoking in the courtyard/s, although the whole place is meant to be a non-smoking.
The breakfast was OK and the location of the "hotel" is good, but I would be careful walking around this area late at night - it's still known for muggings - although I suppose that happens in many inner areas in large cities.

This place was full when we were there, and the price must be the main attraction - we paid around AUD120 for a room and breakfast which was very good value for central Sydney. There are pubs/clubs/restaurants close and the harbour is just down the road. The city centre and its attractions are only a short walk.

If you want atmosphere this is NOT your place - but for price and location it's a good option.

Stayed for 4 nights at this small friendly hotel. We thought it was a good location and the walk through the botanical gardens to the city centre a bonus. The location was fine and close to the 'up and coming' Woolamaloo area. it was also close to Kings Cross area and we felt that was OK too. All in all no probs with location - OK it's not in darling harbour, it hasn't got a view of the opera house/Harbour bridge but at the end of the end how often do you sit in your room all day looking at the 'sights'??? No...you end up sightseeing!!
The hotel owners were extremely helpful and when we arrived early morning we were immediately booked into a room - a blessing after a long flight. Breakfast was good too - you can have breakfast al fresco weather permitting. The owners were extremely accomodating.
This accomodation was good value for money in an expensive city. You are close to trendy Fingers Wharf and the famous 'Harry de Wheels' pie van. If we were in Sydney we would stay here again. It probably doesn't have the frills of the more expensive hotels but as long as the room is clean, functional and staff are freindly - what more could you ask for? The rooms were cleaned daily and had a fridge, ironing facilities, TV and we had a small balcony.

“A little Gem.”

Mariners Court Hotel

8 Feb 2008

We stayed at the Mariners Court Hotel over new years eve and what a great location this hotel was in. it is about a 15 minute walk to the opera house through the Botanic gardens. the man at reception i believe his name was Robert, was an absolute gentleman who runs an excellent establishment. he was helpful on all aspects of sydney. the room was excellent too, clean fresh towels everyday and the continental breakfast was a surprise too. i was a bit surprised by some of the comments that was made about this hotel with regards to it's location, it is in a area called wooloomooloo think i spelled it right. Harrys pie shop is at the end of the street which makes it full of tourists. we had absolutely no problems. believe me i seen 5 star hotels in sydney in worse areas. the price is good too for this little gem. for what you get you get a whole lot more. i could not praise this place enough. if you want to enjoy this beautiful city but do not want to pay the prices, stay at the mariners court. you won't be dissapointed.
