We stayed two nights here after an overland trip from Broome. Located a few minutes from the lively hub of Mitchell Street, the Banyan View Lodge offers a quieter backpacker alternative.
Our double aircon room was clean and had a much valued fridge (after nine nights on the road, these things matter). Free (albeit a little slow) internet access was available at several locations and the kitchen was well equipped, if slightly short on seating.
We didn't have time to make use of the pool & garden, but others seemed to enjoy it, and there was not the late night noise that sometimes emanates from these areas at hostels.
The only weak spot was the mixed bathroom & showers, which probably needs a little more thorough maintenance. One of the shower cubicle doors remained jammed while we were there, the sinks had no plugs etc. Despite this, they were usable, and not dissimilar to other hostels.
The No.4 bus stops right outside, and seems to cover a lot of the main visitor attractions (city centre, casino, Mindil Beach. museum, Botanic Gardens etc). A day pass is just $5, which pays for itself if you make 2 or more trips.
Rebecca on Reception proved to be extremely helpful throughout our stay, even interrupting her break to track down the venue for a soccer match I'd heard about.
The price was good value, and it's even better knowing that some of the proceeds go towards helping disadvantaged women & families.
If you're looking for a party atmosphere, bar etc, you'd be better off in the main backpacker zone. But for a relaxing location, slightly away from the main hubbub, the Banyan View Lodge is ideal.
