First impressions count. When we arrived, reception was unattended. We waited for some time, then wandered around looking for someone and finally I rang them on my mobile from reception! Someone eventually came running in and said they were doing room service but there was a button we could have pressed. They then admitted that the button isn't prominently displayed. Correct - it is not obvious at all. How about a sign telling us what to do if reception is unattended?
Our premium room was upstairs facing St Kilda Road so quite a bit of traffic noise well into the night and starting early in the morning. The bathroom, as others have noted, was quite small although the shower cubicle was a good size. The room itself was oddly proportioned - nowhere else to place the bed except quite close to the entrance door, making things a little snug.
We were meant to get a newspaper delivered to our room each morning but I had to ask at reception on the first morning as none had been delivered. They didn't appear to have any and said they'd have to 'hunt around'. The newspaper was in the room on our return at the end of the day but that's not when we wanted it.
The hotel has a reasonably pleasant reading room with a lot of tourist material as well as some magazines but most of the magazines appeared to be years out of date.
The hotel building is quite lovely and is situated reasonably close to the city. There's a tram stop nearby which takes you to the city or to St Kilda in the other direction. We ate out for our entire stay so cannot comment on the hotel meals. Melbourne has good restaurants and cafes everywhere so we took advantage of that particularly as we also caught up with friends and family.
Overall, not convinced this experience was good value for money, and they definitely need to pay more attention to those important little details.
