“Always beware the lure of a sparkling lobby area”

Citigate Perth

11 Jun 2008

A classic example of a hotel where all the money has been spent on the reception and lobby areas to create the illusion of a grand hotel.

And with all that money spent on making the lobby ritzy, its not a surprise to find that not a cent has been spent on keeping the rooms clean and modern.

The rooms are large and have everything you need (fridge, minibar, tv, desk, bath, wardrobe etc), but the bed needed a new mattress (it always grosses me out staying at hotels with 'worn out' mattresses eeeewwwww), and the room was in desparate need of a clean, preferably a makeover and some decent lighting. The carpet had stains all over it, and the top of the desk was filthy.

The location was also very ordinary - Construction sites next door and across the road dont make for peace and quiet (or nice views from the window), and there are better options a little closer to the mall & underground train station.

I got off to a good start with the service - I arrived at 9am and a room was already ready so I didnt have to put my luggage in storage. But it went downhill quite quickly - the bill for the drinks at the downstairs bar arrived before the drinks did, and the room service phone number rang out. In-room breakfast is ridiculously expensive ($25 for cereal, toast, vegemite & juice)

Would I stay here again? Only if there wasnt anything else available, but it wouldnt be my first choice.

A well placed city centre hotel. Good access to CBD, Swan River and Art Gallery, Museum area. Plenty of local bars, eating places, and internet cafes.

“Faded Grandeur”

Citigate Perth

The citigate looks very grand, but the rooms are very jaded and in need of a refresh. The roms are of a good size and are kept fairly clean, but this place is nothing to write home about.

Its bad... they know it... so when you book on the booking websites they have a "no cancel" policy so if you find out after you have booked you cant change your mind.

Its old, the rooms are need of a referb & next door is a MASSIVE construction site. All of this you can live with for the right price but, for me, what I couldnt handle is the fact the aircon doesnt work... you could blow harder than the power that it chucks out cold air at.

The staff issue you with a fan when you complain but as the windows dont open this simply circulates the hot air around. One member of staff asked me to complain as "then maybe management will do something about it". Another told me all the dust from the construction site blocks the filters everyday so the aircon stops.

Either way I would rather sleep on the beach then spend another night with a "heat headache" in this hotel.

We booked this hotel mainly because of the price. They were doing a special rate for $109. I was concerned that the room would be shabby but my fears were unfounded. The room had been reburbished and was spacious and clean and security was good. The staff were friendly and helpful. We required parking which is next door in a public car park. This cost $15 per night but there was always plenty of spaces. The Ovations bar was a good place to sit in the evening before dinner and have a drink but the two Tv's operating at the same time and on different channels can be a little distracting. However there are plenty of other bars and resteraunts within walking distance so no need to drink there if you are not happy. The bar did close a little early too. I would stay here again.

    • Liked — Spacious room
    • Disliked — Limited opening hours of the bar. Had to rely on room service for a coffee.
