Having been so highly rated in tripadvisor, I wouldnt have expected mosquitos! Had i knew, I would have saved my son three nasty bites that almost ruined our vacation. But if you can survive the mosquitos then this hotel has its upside.
Location. One of the best locations in the area with easy access to Murray and Hay St Malls. Walking distance to the Perth underground train station and the Esplanade bus ports.
Breakfast. The food was ok, not raving excellent as most people have reviewed. There is no variety from day to day. So if staying for extended period of time you'll probably be tired of the same food everyday.
Rooms. Save for the mosquitos, it was clean. I even checked the sheets for insects but it was clean. Outside the room though, the floors were creaking and you can hear people when they walk by. Its a clean 3-star hotel and nothing more. The room has internet but its 5AUD/hr
Staff. Indifferent.
Security. None. Anyone can walk in and out of the hotel without question.
My thoughts. I'd skip this if travelling with young children.
Good feel about the place, really nice old building. Food was quality but a little overpriced I thought. I used it as a stopover from the mines to back home for something different and will prob be back for the accom but will get my eats elsewhere, plenty of places around.
I have been told that Miss Mauds Swedish Hotel is an institution and 'got to visit' place in Perth. Now I know why. It is a quaint, Swedish themed hotel and just great all around for value, comfort, accommodation, service, location and breakfast. Having obtained a business rate including the famous buffet breakfast included in the accommodation, this place cannot be highly recommended enough. If you visit, you must have the breakfast in the restaurant with absolutely everything you can imagine on offer. We also had a lovely dinner in the restaurant however if you are after a quiet secluded and romantic place, this is not for you - lots of families with kids and an accordion and piano playing duo who got louder and louder but its all part of the charm! You will love this place and the service and friendly staff.
The Swedish theme makes this hotel rather unique. The location in the middle of downtown is very convenient with lots of places nearby, including a supermarket. However, everything shuts down about 6:00 PM so there are much fewer options for a late dinner - mostly restaurants in hotels, including this one. The airport shuttle bus picks up across the street, as does the extremely useful free Red Cat local bus service.
The room was small but adequate. (I had a single, some rooms may be more than described here.) However there wasn't much drawer space, just what was in the desk. The closet space was small because of the mini-bar refrigerator. The fridge also made a bit of noise, but not too annoying. I could also hear a bit of noise from other rooms, but it was muffled and not an impediment to sleep. The building does have quite a lot of stairs. There is an elevator (very slow) but even that requires a few stairs for access!
The bathroom was small but satisfactory. Good shower with satisfactory temperature and pressure, but very sensitive to the controls. However there are no wash cloths (a British descended thing) and the towels were very scratchy. I realize hotels use towels heavily and they won't be like what one has at home - but these were really far worse than I've had in any other hotel.
The highlight is the included breakfast. Served in the adjacent restaurant this was the probably the best breakfast buffet I've ever had. Various hot items such as sausage, round bacon (what in the US is called Canadian) eggs, pancakes, french toast. Plus rolls and danish, cold cereal, fruit. Of course various juices and tea and coffee. By having such a good breakfast you don't need much for lunch.
