4 of us (2 couples) had the misfortune to "dine" at The Works in February 2012. We ordered 4 steaks all cooked medium. Really this couldn't have been simpler for the chef to prepare. However, when the meal turned up, 2 steaks were as ordered, and the other 2 were well done and appeared to be of a different variety. For our own benefit, my wife suggested that we swop so that we could all start our meal at the same time. Our waiter, who was the only one of the staff who showed any professionalism at all offered to cook another steak, but for the reason stated we declined because I didn't want to be starting my meal when the rest of the party were finishing theirs. I did ask that the error be taken into account when the bill was presented. It transpired that no allowance was made for the error and it was then that the fun and games started. The "manager", an arrogant and patronising youth pointed out to our party that "this is not the way things work". We then asked to see the owner and it was relayed to us that she was too busy. He then returned and offered 6 dollars off the 140 dollar bill as compensation. Further remonstrations resulted in the "busy" owner presenting herself trotting out the same platitudes. This whole event happened over the course of 1+ hours, most of which time the staff ignored us. In the end we paid our 134 dollars as the police were called and an extremely pleasant officer intervened, understood our situation but said that we would have to pay the full amount. I would point out that not at anytime did we say that we wouldn't pay as we had put 120 dollars in notes on the table at the outset. It is clear that the "management" of The Works haven't got the remotest idea of how to run a restaurant, and I am positive that the attitude that they displayed will result in the early failure of the business. Hopefully this review will deter people from visiting and will result in a much greater loss than the 20 dollar reduction that we were asking for. In conclusion, it maybe worth a visit from the entertainment angle, just to see how the Gisborne equivalent of Fawlty Towers is run!
