“What a let down”

St Moritz Queenstown

Save Review

The first impression as you drive up is one of it being a bit special. That lasts 10 seconds until you walk in the front door and realise there are 8 steps down to the lobby, and no ramp, and no-one to help with the bags. From that bad start it got worse, as there were 3 steps up inside our room! After a full day travelling lugging bags around is not ideal.
We had a King Suite overlooking the lake, and the view was very good, but the window was painfully small.
The walls between rooms are very thin, and we heard everything from a group of noisy, unattended children who ran around their room until the early hours each night.
We did not eat there at all. We thought 26$ for breakfast was completely out of court, and had a nice breakfast each morning in town for around 7$ each.
We did not use Internet access either, as it seemed over the top to be charging for a service many hotels will provide free of charge these days.
All in all we would not stay there again, and compared with other hotelsd in New Zealand this does not present value for money.

“Take a cab to another hotel to use their jacuzzi?!”

St Moritz Queenstown

16 Apr 2008

We prepaid for this hotel and were not told at the time that we did that that the health club and jacuzzi/spa were under construction. We only found that out when we got there and was told that they would pay for us to take a cab to another hotel so we could use their jacuzzi and then take a cab back. Who wants to get into a cab all wet??

Soap insanely small. Shampoo horrid.

Told parking was $10/night when the check-in papers said $5/night.

Our room was on the 7th floor, but the elevator only went to the 6th.

I could go on, but. . .STAY AWAY from this hotel!!!

“Bit Over Rated”

St Moritz Queenstown

11 Apr 2008

Being a New Zealand resident maybe I'm being a bit hard on the Mercure Grand Hotel St Moritz when compared to how overseas guest might view this property but I have to say there were areas where I was disappointed. Namely the check in, which was slow then the room amenities (lack of) and comfort of the bed (very soft), which gave me a very sore back in the morning. On the plus side the view from our room was excellent but the plus here was being given a room with a balcony. Location wise the Mercure Grand Hotel St Moritz is within short walking distance to the city centre and staff were friendly though I encountered language issues with one staff member, obviously employed on a working holiday. I only ate breakfast at the hotel, which was reasonable but lacked a generous range of food options. This hotel has Internet facilities in the room but expensive at (NZD) $ 33.00 for 24-hours access - Capped at 50MB, which I thought should be unlimited given Internet is cheap in New Zealand and 50MB wouldn't go very far. Overall the hotel design was nice, warm and inviting with it's use of New Zealand natural materials like wood, schist and stone to create that Swiss alpine feel. Overall I think Mercure Grand Hotel St Moritz could have done so much more in what is an off peak period in Queenstown.

“Very Nice Hotel”

St Moritz Queenstown

11 Apr 2008

Very nice hotel with exceptionally helpful staff. Always a smile on their faces. We stayed in a room over the driveway which was not ideal but did not keep us awake as much as some according to their reviews. Room clean, bed very comfortable. Breakfast a little pricey for what you get so decided to eat in town thereafter. The hill up to the hotel did not bother me (meant I didn't have to go to the gym) but I can see where it could be a major turn off for many. Yes I would stay there again but maybe book a room with a lake view.

“Loved It!!!”

On arrival the valet was there to park the car & take our luggage straight away. Check-in was a breeze & we upgraded our 1 bedroom suite to a water view for only $30.00NZD per night extra. It was worth it the view over the lake was great. Hotel is immaculately clean & decor very classy but comfortable. I alike this to staying in the Swiss Alps, it has the feel of Switzerland, relaxing. Bed & pillows were awesome & room was huge with lounge area, separate bedroom, large bathroom with shower & bath. Shower was hot & great pressure. Kitchen & washing machine & dryer was great to have in room. We didn't have breakfast at the hotel, but had a three course dinner there & it was by far the best value & best food we had on our trip to New Zealand. Staff were very attentive & friendly.
Hotel is within walking distance to town, but be prepared for the huge hill up to the hotel it is a killer. Especially after a big meal & a few too many drinks, it was the last thing we wanted to have to trek up home each night.
Internet was fast & easy to use.
We loved it at the ST Moritz.
Only couple of things that did annoy us but by far the good outweighs this is, that you can hear everything from the rooms next door, running the bath, talking etc & there are no in room safes which we found odd.
Check this hotel out, we would stay here again any time.
