Stayed here 2 nights at the end of our NZ trip, and it was wonderful. Details...

GOOD:
--We got a slightly upgraded room from whatever the base level was, and it was a great space. Huge, nicely appointed, spectacular views from a private deck, full kitchen, laundry
--Location has great views all around, and its easy to find on the road from the airport to town
--Breakfasts in the restaurant buffet were quite tasty
--For the most part, staff were friendly and helpful (see BAD below for the one exception)

BAD:
--Rooms had no air conditioning and no screens in the windows. For this price point, I would expect one or the other.
--While the breakfasts were good, don't get there within 30 minutes of closing time - they seem to be put out by the fact that people still wanted to eat then.

Overall, it was a very nice place - they just need to put in some screens!

Stayed here for three nights 9, 10 and 11 March 08 and the location just out of town is great, (but fortunately we did have a hire car.) No noise from other rooms or traffic.
Their 2 bed/2 bathroom apartments are very spacious with lovely clean granite kitchens and new appliances, all trendy colours, good lighting and comfortable furniture and beds, remote gas log fire and flat screen TVs. Bathrooms have sub floor heating, frameless screens. Big view windows and large balcony with fold back doors (looked like this did not apply for single rooms) for unrestricted 180 degree views of Lake Wakatipu to the Remarkables range - so good it looked like a film backdrop. Some of the staff were very helpful with directions and answering questions about Queenstown and making bookings - others were a bit vague a couple of times like when we needed new batteries for the remotes - fortunately we speak English.
There are only 3 remarks that we would make if we were recommending it to friends:
1. - We were surprised to find out that the restaurant/bar area had just been closed (for the low season?) on the day we arrived, which meant that we needed to go in to Queenstown to eat out of the apartment. This was not indicated on their website.
2. - The room servicing was a bit erratic - sometimes very late afternoon and needing prompting.
3. - There was just nowhere to put cases or clothing in the main bedroom (and I mean nowhere - only a mini cupboard not even deep enough for a clothes hanger, no shelf for a case and not really any room to even put a case on the floor around the bed.) This could have been annoying if we had decided to share with another couple. Luckily we had taken the 2 bedroom option so we just used the second room as our dressing room and put our cases on the two single beds.
However in all it was still very clean, new and with a great feel when you walked into the apartment, and having our own washing machine and dryer was also very convenient in the middle of a 2 week holiday as we did not have to waste time waiting at laundromats.

We found this on Wotif.com after a disastrous first night somewhere else in Queenstown.

This turned out to be a gem. Wonderful 2-bedroom courtyard apartment with some lake views, fully and beautifully equipped (incl. flatscreen tvs in living area and master bedroom).

We stayed here for 6 nights with another family and my parents, and loved it. Outdoor area has free bbqs, place was immaculate, staff friendly, Wotif.com rates are negotiable at reception... and brilliantly located on lake just outside Queenstown centre.

Such good value for money and the highlight of our holiday.

“The views are worth the stay”

Oaks Shores

4 Mar 2008

My wife and I stayed here for 4 nights in Feb 2008, and we were happy with the accomodations. We had a deluxe studio which is the larger of the 3 rooms that can be adjoined together to make a 6-10 person stay. The unit was extremely large, quite modern with nice finishings, a full kitchen (all cooking and eating supplies are provided), dishwasher, washer and dryer, two tv's, DVD and CD player, a nice dining room table and a nice living space. The back patio was massive and probably where we spent our time eating breakfast or watching the sun go down. It directly overlooks the water, and you have a beautiful view of Lake Wakatipu.

The resort has a small but substansiable gym, but if you are in Queenstown there are way better activities to do than working out. The restaurant for breakfast was decent, but we either ate in our room or went out to enjoy Queenstown, so we can't say about dinner. The hotel is situated probably a good 5 minute drive from town, and so if you don't have a car you are probably looking at a 25-35 minute walk since it is about 5 km to the heart of the city. If you do have a car definitely hit up a restaurant called Vknow! Outside of town (Fernhill - maybe 10 minutes up the road), but well worth the trip to have more of a local feel. The food was fantastic (try the lamb shanks) and the hospitality could not be beaten. Their website is www.vknow.co.nz

One knock on the Oak Shores was that the room had very little storage for your clothing. Literally a broom closet in the master bedroom and a small drawer set (smaller than a bookshelf) for all your clothing. We actually managed to get everything out of our suitcases by tripling up on hangers and stuffing clothing into the drawers, so manageable. The other knock was that service could have been better and we were disappointed that we had travelled 20 hours from Canada to not be allowed to check in a bit early, which worked out great since we went to town to grab a great lunch at Wiinie's - awesome pizza (www.winnies.co.nz). If these are our only knocks, you know the place is definitely not going to let you down.

“The Best”

Oaks Shores

We booked the Oak Shores after reading great reviews on Trip Advisor and we stayed 2 nights here during a 3 week trip of the South Island. It was by far the best accommodation we stayed in . We travelled in a party of 4 adults and 2 kids and the apartment we were given was in the top block and it was very modern, clean and spacious. There were 3 separate bedrooms each with their own ensuite which was terrific for privacy. The open plan lounge, kitchen, dining room was amazing and we decided to have our dinner indoors one evening as the apartment was just too nice to leave in the evening, with the most beautiful views over Lake Whakatipu. The deck was a great size and equipped with outdoor furniture and was quite private. There were BBQs on the ground floor for the guests to use with a nice paved area and you could access the lake at the bottom of the property and access the walking track into town (which would take approx 30 mins to walk). Our car park was located under the building and it was only a short drive into the town. It was just ideal and definitely worth the price and we would highly recommend it to anyone looking to stay with a family or larger group in Queenstown. Perfect spot.
