My son & I booked the Hotel Bergheim in the ski resort of Lech via Crystal Ski. Ordinarily we would book a 4*, but chose this one, because whilst it was a 3* Crystal added an extra star in their brochure stating it was of a higher standard than its rating suggested.

Having experienced Crystal before I should have really known this 'extra star' wouldn't be true but the price was good so we booked a week half board.

The rest of this review are based on 3* expectations as not to give a false negative on my review.

Beds were typically Austrian, once frame, two mattresses - nothing wrong with that except mattresses were rock hard and even after a busy days skiing it was difficult to get to sleep. Pillows were so soft and light they were almost none existent, manager did provide us with some extras though. In my opinion sleep quality is king when judging a hotel and first impressions they scored 1 out of 10 - not good. Other than that rooms were large enough, reasonable facilities with TV & WIFI, average bathroom and toilet but all in keeping with what was expected.

Evening meals were VERY Austrian, nothing wrong with that in Austria I hear you say - but traveling with a picky eater made the experience quite stressful. Kids menu was limited so very little option other than for my son to either eat elsewhere or repeat the same meal. I travel a lot and I know its great to experience new food, but when a hotel routinely has foreign guests there should be at least some coping mechanism for this - good job my son likes Wiener Schnitzel!

I think one of the main causes for this is that hotel has mostly been for German speaking tourists to date as Crystal have only just re-introduced it into their brochure. If you look for reviews on the Bergheim most recent are in the German language, and they are very happy hence the high marks. If my palate or my language was more Germanic I suspect my experience would have been very different. BTW I travel to Germany most months so I am very used to the culture / food so please don't put this comment down as being a 'green' British traveler expecting Egg & Chips wherever I go.

Staff where a little 'fawlty towers', always felt we were being monitored or judged - it could have been my paranoia but there was something just not right because whilst most people where pleasant to your face I did sense something, I just cant say what though. Mind you I probably got a reputation the first night when I suggested that a shared table wasn't what we had booked for dinner, perhaps they think British people are one big happy family and cant wait to break bread together!

The manager was certainly the most pleasant person and he did deliver some exemplary service during our time there, but the under-current wasn't nice. Add to this 'atmosphere' the fact that the hotel was not 4 minutes from the ski lift as described (unless by jet air plane), and was most certainly up a hill away from the centre of the resort and I think you can summarise that I was somewhat dis-pleased.

It may seem a little strong to give 2 out of 5, but my generosity here was the same as the perceived service I got. Some people seemed to love it and revel in it, not sure if they get out much or if Im just a miserable so and so, but I know what I like and I dont like the Bergheim...or Crystals description of it!

Dear guest.

thanks for your input and i am sorry that you didn't like much the stay in our house.
I want to answer to your review:

* beds to hard, this is difficult because guest have different requests - some find the beds even to soft..but as you said we found a solution.

* dinner to austrian - we also serve international food of course - could be that in that week it wasn't, but we have a 4 dish menu (+ salad buffet) with 2 mains to choose, and if you dont't like something please tell the staff, we can always serve other specialities on request - also for the children.

* shared table - that week was crowded in the restaurant - so I had not place for all guest for their own table - so I tried to share (with other english guest - to have a talk) - but rest of the week you had your own table. - and I am suprised that you were not content with the service (I had no negative response from any other guest)

* long way to the ski-lifts - there is a bus station behind our nighbour hotel - just 50 meters away - then it is easy to reach the center and the ski-lift (ok my mistake is the lack of this information)

Hope I explained some points
Best regards from Lech
the Manager (Martin)

We have been on family ski trips for the last 10 years. This is our second trip to Lech. Martin and the Bergheim team made us so welcome. A wonderful ambience and very friendly. The service of the staff was very very good. The food was excellent, both breakfast and evening meal. The highlight had to be the Xmas Eve experience. Cocktails around the Xmas Tree and a memorable meal. This is by far the best food, service and value for money we have had. Martin I congratulate you. I am sure we will back soon. I would have no doubt in recommending this hotel

just returned from a 8 nights at this hotel with friends
room very spacious and cleaned every day to a high standard
Martin and staff very attentive and welcoming, although only 1 waitress would speak english to us , but was told the other two could speak a bit of english but would not to us
we were a group of 7 and had a lovely table in the dining room, but on the last night without any warning we were moved to make way for new guests, really should of been told and not let us turn up to see our table had been changed, so maybe I am being a little harsh on not scoring excellent but little things do make the difference
food very good

Lech is a very popular but yet cozy village in Arlberg, and we have found our favourite place here! The Bergheim hotel is located in walking distance from the slopes, and is a clean, well driven family hotel with a great atmosphere. Also very important for us - the children are very welcome. The restaurant shows flexibility when it comes to the courses for children, the gaming room is perfect for them if they have any energy left after a day in the slopes. We really recommend the half pension with breakfast and 3 course meal for dinner. Excellent food! Also it is worth to mention that the hotel has a very up-to-date relax area with saunas and different showers etc, excellent for tired legs after skiing.

Very clean and friendly atmosphere ! They really go out of their way to make your stay most comfortable . The cuisine is top notch and just an over all super place to vacation! The night-life is just out-of -this-world! The rooms are of nice size and as I've mentioned very clean which is extremely important to our family. Shower has very hot water any time of the day or night. You will have the time of your life with the Bucher Family atmosphere . JUST LOVELY!!!!!!!!!

Room tip: All rooms are nice but for romance a balcony is nice.
