What a wonderful find! The blend of architecture and decor, the lush gardens, the diminutive but comfortable pool, the delicious breakfasts, and the smiling staff made for a memorable visit. Add to that the presence of a mommy horse and her colt in the "back yard" of the inn, a shepherd tending his goats at night, and the quiet remoteness of the Alavera, and it is pure "Spain."
The walk to Ronda can be tortuous for some, especially on the slick cobblestones (hint: keep to the wall side where the stones are not as worn), but there is a certain challenge and romance to the long walk up and back. Construction of the only road into the inn at the time of our visit mandated a very tricky dirt-road detour, but somehow we met the challenge.
Dinners at the Alavera are fine, but pricey. A good bet is a short walk up the street to "Bar Clemente," which serves incredible and quite affordable meals in a very casual, family atmosphere.
