“Fabulous place (and we got a very large room)”

Alavera de los Banos

13 May 2007

I guess we were lucky, because our room was very large, with a magnificent bathroom. It faced the quiet road, where we didn't hear a sound for our whole stay. The Moroccan decor was lovely, and the owner gave us a bit of the hotel's history. The breakfast was excellent, with plently of fruit and locally sourced cheeses and cured meats, served impeccably. At the check in we were greated by a nice girl who speaks English, and who suggested us a few of the restaurants and tapas bars for the locals (as opposed to tourists). We tried one of those (as the hotel's restaurant was closed) and we found that her suggestion was excellent. I can't recommend this hotel strongly enough.

We stayed here 4 nights in April, in a tiny, dark room on the street - a double room with one chair. I begged for a second chair so I could sit but was shrugged off. We asked for another room but were told by one woman they were full and nothing could be done, although another did show us a different, smaller room. They served paella that was so salty it was like eating spoonfulls of salt - horribly inedible. One night the fish on brochette was wonderful, the next it was overcooked and dry. The bathroom was wonderful and other guests were nice, but I would not return under any circumstance.

I stayed here in October 2005, when I was travelling in Spain on my own. All staff were wonderfully friendly and helpful. My room, immediately above the reception / dining area, was small but beautifully and simply furnished with wonderful views. It was spotless. The food was wonderful; I don't think I've had a better breakfast and the evening meals were also very good. It's also good to note that as a single female traveller I felt perfectly comfortable dining alone - that can in some places feel awkward. The gardens were also lovely, though being so low in the valley, at that time of year the gardens lost the sun quite early. I was able to park close by without a problem, though finding the hotel would have been difficult if a friend who'd stayed there previously had not given me specific directions. It's situated out of the main town - that makes it wonderfully peaceful, but the walk up to the town is pretty steep and demanding, and parking in Ronda itself is hard to find. Having said that, I'd go back there like a shot and I'd love to spend some more time exploring the local area - and I wouldn't consider staying anywhere else!

We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights 8th - 11th September, this being our 4th visit, the friendly service and unique ambience combined with the peaceful setting did not disappoint.

We were lucky to plan our visit when Ronda was having its 3 day festival and bullfight, although the town was packed and very lively which was brilliant, we had the sanctuary of the Alavera de los Banos.

we will return!

What a wonderful find! The blend of architecture and decor, the lush gardens, the diminutive but comfortable pool, the delicious breakfasts, and the smiling staff made for a memorable visit. Add to that the presence of a mommy horse and her colt in the "back yard" of the inn, a shepherd tending his goats at night, and the quiet remoteness of the Alavera, and it is pure "Spain."
The walk to Ronda can be tortuous for some, especially on the slick cobblestones (hint: keep to the wall side where the stones are not as worn), but there is a certain challenge and romance to the long walk up and back. Construction of the only road into the inn at the time of our visit mandated a very tricky dirt-road detour, but somehow we met the challenge.
Dinners at the Alavera are fine, but pricey. A good bet is a short walk up the street to "Bar Clemente," which serves incredible and quite affordable meals in a very casual, family atmosphere.
