If you happen to be in the Palmerston North area of New Zealand a trip to Owlcatraz is a great way to spend 1/2 a day. Situated just outside the town of shannon it is a small privately run pseudo-zoo. As the name sugests it is mostly about owls (mostly of the small fluffy variety that you have to stop children from trying to smuggle home). However it also has a number of other interesting creatures that make the trip well worth while. Owlcatraz is home to a large varitey of native NZ bird life, all of which can be viewed at close quarters, as well as housing two of the most gigantic cattle in the world. Standing as tall as most draught horses these gentle giants are truely wonderful, and they are great with kids. there are also deer, pigs, some rather confused ducks (one of which thought it was a pig), a yak and chinchillas. For anyone who has never seen a chinchilla before, they are small south american creatures, about the size of a cat, who look somewhat like a persian version of a possum wearing a mink coat. simply put they are adorable!!!
on top of everything else there is also a man made glow worm cave which is a facinating, up close look at these strange insects.
well worth a stop if you are passing through.
