The cathedral itself, St. Peter and Paul, also known as Petrov was built during the 14th and 15th centuries. It is located on the top of the hill, known as Petrov, on the presumed site of the former Brno castle. After the castle`s demise the free-standing Romanesque basilica was rebuilt as a Gothic cathedral in the 13th century and converted to the Baroque style in the 18th century. Its current neo-Gothic form dates from the turn of this century. Since 1777 the cathedral has been the seat of the Brno bishopric. The original church crypt from the 12th century is now accessible to visitors.
Its bells ring noon at 11am!! You can purchase a ticket for about 50kc or so, to climb all the way up the steeples!!! (not a good idea to climb up at 11am though!lol) This isn't for the faint hearted!! I felt quite sick going up, but the view was outstanding and was well worth it!!! The ticket usually also includes a visit to the jewels on your way down (sometimes they have an additional fee of something like 25kc during busy seasons).
Like I said, the cathedral is situated on a big hill, so you cant miss it!! it watches you wherever you go!!
This cathedral is amazing, it stands out so much in comparison to the industrial buildings surrounding it!! Its so striking and beautiful, it cant be missed if you're visiting Brno!
There are a couple of way to get to the cathedral, either by one of the side streets off masarykova ulice(street) and save yourself the many many steps, as opposed to if you went up from nove sady. It is still uphill either way, so good shoes are required, as there are also cobbled streets surrounding it! We usually go up by masarykova and come down to steps!! The view from the top is outstanding, and you can see so far!! Especially from the steeples!!
A nice time to go is just before sunset, because you can see it all of Brno in daylight, and then at night too!!
Mass times are 7.30am, and 9.00am, in czech. and 10.00am in latin, once every other sunday. (They do change the times depending on the season). The latin mass takes place in a little side chapel. which isnt open to visit, but only for mass.
The main cathedral is where the czech mass happens. There is also a small eucharist adoration chapel, which is beautiful and is nice for a couple of moments of prayer.
Theres a couple of nice cafes near by (on the masarykova ulice side of the church,) theres a little street on the way to silingrovo namesti so you might want to have a drink and a pancake going up or down!! A nice cafe in particular is opposite to the church shop. But excuse their black labrador, he likes to come and see what your drinking!!lol
Oh and dont forget your camera!!
Hope this helped!
