As I checked in I saw a whole series of awards behind the desk, including one from Trip Advisor, so I was expecting something great. The Kossak did not live up to that, but it is very good hotel none the less. We were given our room early and although on the first floor, we had a fine view of the castle. The thick double glazing, designed to keep out the Polish winter, closed off the traffic noise from the street a few feet away.
Rooms are modern and reasonably spacious and the bed is large and comfortable. The shower screen only covers half the bath so some splashing on the bathroom floor is inevitable. The shower pressure was adequate but not quite as high as I would like. The cleaner failed to replace our towels and left empty shampoo bottles in the bath area, not a huge fault - when I asked for new towels later that evening, they arrived within minutes - but attention to small details like that is what separates a great hotel from a merely good one.
The best view in Krakow can be found from the hotel balcony which has an excellent cafe/restaurant - the Kossak is worth a stay for that alone. The breakfast buffet has a modest range but I was happy to see an emphasis on local Polish foods which I was happy to try.
The Kossak is a medium sized hotel which has most of the facilities of a large multinational chain but the feel of a family run establishment. It does not get a lot of natural light but clever use of artificial lighting and modern decor avoids a gloomy atmosphere. Rooms at the back may have a rather dismal view of an office block but those at the front have a great view of the castle and river Vistula.
The bottom line in these reviews are, would I stay there again and would I recommend the hotel to a friend? The answer to both questions is an unreserved 'yes'. I did not find the wow factor one might expect from an award winning hotel but the staff were polite, helpful and courteous and the rooms and food were very good. I hope to return to Poland and if I stay in Krakow, I will look no further than the Kossak which offers high standards at reasonable cost.
