“Great would recommend”

Hotel Pugetow

The Pugetow Hotel ul. Starowislna 15a is not what we might think of as a hotel in that there is no grand front or reception area, nor some of the facilities you might expect from a large complex. There are only six rooms and no lifts, probably the reason it has not got the star ratings it really deserves. What it has to offer it does it very well indeed. It is located nicely between the square and the Jewish quarter and no where is very far to walk to. We had room six at the top floor just under 40 steps up. The room was very well appointed with every thing you could want even to a heated bath mirror to prevent steaming up. The room was clean and the décor excellent and in very good condition. All the staff were friendly and spoke English. The breakfast room is in the cellar (careful with the steps down) with rustic brick surround and the food was one of the best we have had for continual style with nothing done on the cheap. We had a good hotel rate by negotiation direct with the hotel.

You will be offered 20% discount at the sister hotel but it still looked a little pricey for what is available elsewhere. Do try the little restaurant “il calzone” at the back of the Pugetow (not run by the hotel). You would not find this by chance and it is used by the locals. They will supply you with an English menu with a great verity of food. We had a two course meal with wine £30 for the two of us!! Need to book to ensure you have a table.

We booked in advance via the hotel a taxi from the airport which cost about £16. You can at lower cost use the bus then the train and a 15 minute walk.

During our stay we arranged via the hotel a coach trip to Concentration camp and the Salt mine. You can do it by bus but we think the distance and time it takes is not the best option, use the organised trip. The Salt mine was great we again used the coach but this be done by bus quite easily and at a lower cost. Suggest you plan to arrive about midday you will miss the earlier mass arrivals by coach. If there are four of you it is quite cost effective to use a taxi, the driver will take you to all these places and wait for you to take you back.

If like us you obtain your local currency from the “hole in the wall” as we do using the no commission free Nationwide card it is worth noting that not all of the banks have international link. Look for the main bank with a blue buffalo as its symbol. There is one opposite the Holiday Inn 4 minutes walk these do have the necessary link.

“Wonderful Staff”

The Hotel Pugetow's best asset is their wonderful staff. They arranged tours and dinner reservations for us and even loaned us money to pay the taxi from the train station when we couldn't find tthe ATM (which we found the next morning right across the street).
The rooms are beautifully decorated and very clean. We were upgraded to a suite, which was huge.
The breakfast was very good in the charming breakfast cellar.
Not mentioned by other reveiwers - The Hotel Pugetow is on the main street between the Market Square and the Jewish Quarter. It turned out to be a convenient location to visit both, taking less than 10 minutes walk in either direction. However, the area looks a bit rough. I wouldn't stay in a US area that looked like this, but our guide assured us it was safe, and Poles on the street did not seem concerned. The hotel sits back off the street near a parking lot used by a nearby business. There was some noise from people coming to work in the morning. There was a lot of noise coming from the restaurant next door, which was about 10 feet away from my bed.
We had a wonderful weekend in Krakow and would recommend the hotel Pugetow, but keep in mind that it can be noisy and the immediate vicinity looks a little rough.

“Ten minutes from main square and jewish quarter”

Stayed for 5 nights in April. Lovely quiet hotel staff were great very helpful. Went to auschwitz / birkenow very early to avoid crowds on the local bus from the main bus station in Krakow, cost 18 zloty return and spent 5 hours there. Hire a guide when you get there for 47 zlts to get the most out your visit. Dont go on a package tour some people only had 45 minutes there!! Tip take your own food to eat very little to buy. Went to salt mine on train for 5 zlts return great trip. Suggest you go on a walk round the Jewish quarter on a tour by the Cool tour company cost 50 zlts leave @ 10am everyday from church in main square in krakow. Lasts about 3 hours Phillip the guide was great.Travel from airport on local shuttle bus 2 mins to train stop then direct to centre of Krakow.Dont go all the way on a bus to town traffic is bad. Another tip , if you travel with Ryan air when you check in at Krakow to come home do not pass straight into the departure area as you with be sat in the gate for 2 hours with no where to go. Finally read all the reviews on trip advisor for more tips. Enjoy your visit to krakow we did!!

I visited Krakow in November 2007 for a weekend break and was blown away by the service at Hotel Pugetow. We availed of the hotel's driver to and from the airport and were glad we made that move. Not only was the driver waiting for us when we arrived, but he waited while we stood in the queue for the ATM and drove us directly to our hotel and was very friendly. When we went to pay him we didn't have the exact change as we had just extracted larger bills from the ATM and there was no change in the hotel. But the driver went and go change from a shop nearby for us while we went inside and were given a coffee by the lovely staff at the hotel. (In fairness, the driver should have had change for us, but the fact that we was so obliging to us and sorted the situation quickly made it all ok). Our room wasn't ready upon our arrival (we were very early) so we were given coffee by the staff and they talked up through our plans for the weekend, offering advice on restaurants and things to do. They gave up brochures and maps as well as vouchers for discount meals.
When our room was ready it was more than I could have asked for. It was extremely spacious and included every amenity you could ask for. We had a mini bar which they did not charge us for the use of, a satallite tv, heated bathroom floors, his and hers bathrobes and the whole room was decorated at a very high standard.
Breakfast was wonderful each morning. The atmospher of the hotel was very cozy and inviting and it was more than another large chain hotel. It really made the whole weekend what it was.
The location of the hotel was wonderful as well.
Every time I go back to Krakow this will be the place I stay!

“Attractive hotel with High Standards of Service”

Hotel Pugetow

13 Jan 2008
6/6 found this review helpful

We spent four nights at the Pugetow as a winter break to see in the New Year. The hotel is well located, just a few minutes level walk from the Market Square. We arranged in advance for the hotel's regular driver to collect us from the airport and return us on the day of departure. This proved a good move since all ran very smoothly. The driver was jovial and highly informative about the city.
We were provided with spacious accommodation within the hotel. This comprised a spacious entrance hall area containing fitted furniture in which to store clothes, a shower room and seperate bedroom. The bedroom was large, contained remote control sattelite televison wiith English-speaking channels and a seating area. the bed was very comfortable. A high standard of decor was maintained throughout aside from some chipped paint on a fitted cupboard which detracted mildly from the otherwise impressive appearance of the room. The shower room was fitted with under-floor heating and was more spacious than might have been expected in a small hotel. The shower cubicle was capacious and the shower itself both modern and reliable. Our opinion of the room was slightly undermined by the fact that we found it took a little longer to heat than we would have hoped. I would suggest that winter visitors turn the dial on the radiator to full before leaving the room in the evening to ensure the room is sufficiently warm on return.
The hotel's staff were consistently faultless. They were impeccably polite and dealt with requests quickly and efficiently. We had some difficulties with the television remote control, for example, but this was quicly remedied by a very polite and efficient member of staff.
The buffet breakfast is served in the hotel basement and was of a good standard. There are no hot items available but plenty of choice amongst what is presented. Since this is a particularly small hotel there was none of the bustle often associated with hotel breakfast dining. In fact, we had the breakfast room to ourselves each morning. Furthermore, we saw no sign of any other hotel guests throughout our stay.
The hotel Pugetow maintains high standards throughout. It's staff must rank amongst the most polished and attentive I have encountered anywhere. For these reasons I would unreservedly recommend it as a convenient place to stay when exploring Krakow and its environs.
