I chose stop off in Poprad mid-way through a trip from Kiev to Vienna by train, as it's on the main rail route and also has easy access to the High Tatras for skiing at Tatranska Lomnica and Srbske Pleso, via the efficient narrow-gauge railway. You can be on the slopes at T.L. in about an hour, for a round-trip ticket cost of 3 euros. Poprad itself doesn't have a lot to write home about, though all the services you could need in the town centre and train station, plus an attractive area of historic buildings just outside the centre in Spisska Sobota.
Arriving late by train, it was very helpful to receive a text message with a door entry code and directions to the pension (reception shuts at 17.30). The building is just a couple of minutes from the station. My room was basically furnished (IKEA) but comfortable, clean and warm. I appreciated the comprehensive information pack in English and the free wifi. I reserved via booking.com, which mentioned that breakfast would be available for a 5 euro supplement. This turned out not to be the case - more clarity would have been appreciated.
All in all, the pension definitely served its purpose and there's not much to fault.
