We stayed 3 nights at Danum House at the end of a 10 week tour of NZ and Oz. It was by far the worst experience of the entire trip. Specifically:
Breakfast. Was at a time decided Helena, not a time of our choice. Although the time we were given was 9:00 am, we had to wait for breakfast. No choice of breakfast menu, other than for coffee or tea. No toast, no cereal and for two days out of three only one cup of tea or coffee offered. The quality of the ingredients, for example the only juice we were served (apple), was generally poor and the daily scrambled egg was cold when it arrived. My partner requested a boiled egg on the first day but they forgot. Second day the boiled egg was uncooked and on the third day was hardboiled and served with a burned roll. No salt or pepper until we requested it. The cutlery and crockery was grubby at best and dirty at worst, and one day there was hair on the breakfast. Breakfast for two was served on a minute table 50 cm diameter. Breakfast for guests in all three rooms was served (in 2 shifts when all three rooms were occupied) on two such tables directly outside our bedroom so we had little privacy in the mornings.
Room. Fittings in the room and bathroom were old. Toiletries and cosmetics from previous guests were left in the bathroom. One bedside light didn't work. Tea bags and milk in our room ran out so we had to ask for more. Towels in bathroom were grey rather than the intended white; they looked shabby and few matched.
Property. During our stay the outside of the entire building was cleaned using a Karcher. No problem there, but nobody cleaned up the grit that was removed from the walls and so it remained on the pathways, patio and even the pavement outside the property - so this was of course carried into the building and our room. The floor in our room appeared not to be cleaned during our 3 day stay. No spare toilet rolls provided until the third day.
Finally, and my error not anyone else's, what a mistake to book a place without airconditioning in Fremantle in March. The outside temperature the day of our arrival was 40 Celsius and not much less in our room that night. Fans of course only circulate the hot air - they don't cool it.
Oh, and the wireless internet (which had to be paid for) was useless as there was a minimal signal anywhere near our room or the hallway - presumably the wireless router was sited to suit the hosts not the guests.
Danum house was not low dollar compared to other hotels and B&Bs we stayed at on this trip, but it was certainly run as a low budget operation and was a massive disappointment for us and one that proved to be very poor value for money.
