Since I was here for a conference, I got a good rate of $169/night. When I made the reservation, they were very accomodating and kept in constant contact.

It's a pretty property in a great spot--right above the Metro Center stop. You can walk to many good restaurants and sights, like the Spy Museum, the American Art Museum, Chinatown and more. You can also easily jog to the Mall.

The beds were exceptionally comfortable, the bathroom clean and bright. I really liked their "citrus & lavender" soaps and shampoos and the massaging shower with several settings. They tell you that they will only change your linens and towels every 3 days, which you can change if you just let them know. My housekeeper even left me a note on the first day saying, "Thank you very much, you have a nice day!" (I leave a dollar tip per day.) And she changed my towels anyway. Philip in the Grand Cafe was a very nice and attentive waiter.

I should add that most of the conference lunch food was the regular old tired fare. Their desserts were all outstanding, for some odd reason. They also catered an event at the Wooly Mammoth Theatre one night, and that food was exceptional. Who knew that the same fabulous food at that reception was from the kitchen that served us the overdone chicken/fish for lunch every day? Not me.

There was a snippy woman with glasses working at the concierge desk. She seemed to be very experienced by the way she spoke of things, but she wasn't helpful to me and didn't speak very nicely. There was another portly concierge guy who was a little slick....I let him talk me into taking a more expensive shuttle to the airport but I'm sure I could have used my shuttle of preference. He made me use Fox shuttle instead of the Super Shuttle, claiming that the Super Shuttle often did not keep their appointments and left their customers high and dry.

Well, the next morning I went out to meet my Fox shuttle at the appointed time (actually 4 minutes early). I waited....and waited. A Super Shuttle showed up, and the driver asked if my name was Elizabeth. I said no. He waited a few minutes, called HQ, and came back and asked if my last name was Stanfield. I said no. He asked if I was going to Dulles, and I said yes, but maybe I could take her place. I called the concierge desk on my cel phone, and they called Fox shuttle to straighten out the mess, but it took so long that the Super Shuttle guy had to leave! Well, it turns out the Fox shuttle had picked up the wrong customer and left without me. NELSON from the concierge desk made Fox shuttle send me a private car. It was going to cost an extra $20 for the private car, so Nelson forked out $20 from his own wallet (he'll get reimbursed by the hotel) and sent me on my way! Of course, when the driver came I said, "so the shuttle picked up Elizabeth Stanfield?" He laughed and said that was exactly her name. Anyway, that was my long story on slimy concierges, and tons of kudos to Nelson who came to my rescue.

I'd stay there again if I got a good rate!

I stayed at this hotel on Memorial Day Weekend. I found the staff to be very polite and efficient. I loved the location--having a major metro station attached to the hotel was very convenient. Also, the area surrounding the hotel had lots of restaurants such as Subway, Fuddruckers, Potbelly Burgers, and a CVS pharmacy. The hotel is within walking distance of the Mall, the White House, Ford's Theater, and various other attractions. The concierge gave us directions and gave us a map when we asked how to get to these places.

“Not so Grand”

Grand Hyatt Washington

I spent June 13-17 at the Grand Hyatt to attend a conference. I was not impressed:

I reserved a king but was given a double.
The front desk personnel repeatedly lied to me about the availability of king rooms.
There were no chairs in the double room, just 2 beds and a desk chair.
The front desk promised me a chair but never delivered.
Awakened on Saturday morning at 7:30 am by loud brilling and pounding noises.
The front desk feigned ignorance of the noise and offered no compensation or apologies for the disturbance.
I did not receive a wake up call and missed a meeting.
My boarding pass cost me $13.00 to print.
No change of towels and sheets, even though I told the front desk I didn't wish to participate in their "green" program.
The hotel bars and restaurants closed at 9:30 on Friday night.

Otherwise, the bathroom amenities were great, the room was clean, the food was good and the conference facilities were adequate. I will not return to this hotel.

“Not Luxurious, but not bad”

Grand Hyatt Washington

I stayed at the Grand Hyatt May 14 for Mother's Day weekend. I made the reservations about 2 weeks in advance from the website and paid $139/night. I was surprised at the price as I was expecting a higher rate. I requested a King bed, non-smoking, etc.

When I checked in, I was not greeted in the most pleasant manner- no smile, barely any eye contact. However, I was not put off by this, because I could obviously tell from the bustling lobby- there was a lot going on. She asked me if two doubles were alright and I politely said that it was not and I wanted a king. At first she said that she didn't think there were any kings available. I reiterated in a calm, yet polite voice that I had requested and confirmed a king. She found a king, but it had a city view (which is not as good as the atrium view- I guess). I didn't mind. I didn't come into the District to sit in my hotel room.

I went up to the 7th floor and came into a nice, spotless room with a king size bed. I sighed a breath of relief as the Front Desk agent did not make me feel completely comfortable. I immediately switched into my bathing suit to take a quick swim.

After calling the front desk, I found the pool. The pool is located in the gym/spa area. (I'm not sure if the "spa" is managed by Hyatt) There were 3 employees sitting around talking and I walked in right behind a couple. "UMMMMMM, excuse me?" one of the employees muttered to me. "This is the way to the pool, right?" I asked, innocently. "Yes." He replied. So I said thanks, and kept walking. "Umm, excuse me?" he said again, quite rude. Without thinking, I quickly just blurt out "What?" And he asked me if I was a guest, and since I was- I needed to "sign in". So I went to the counter and he handed me the card asking me for my name and room number. Then I had to check whether I was using the pool or the gym. (Pool use was $7 per person; Gym was $8 per person). I looked at it again, took the piece of paper and ripped it up as I walked off.

$7 to use an indoor pool? Maybe they charge for the pool to bring the room rates down... I'm not sure- but that just came as such a shock to me.

The rest of my stay was wonderfully pleasant. The shower head was AMAZING, I'm now shopping around to find one to install in my own bathroom!

I would stay here. It provided my needs. The bed was incredibly comfortable and the room itself was very spacious.
