The room was horrific, in very bad shape with obviously no maintenance of any kind. The screen on the front door was broke where someone previously had slid their arm through to unlock the door, a bathroom mirror that you could barely see your reflection in, 12 inch gap between the bathroom shower blinds that we had to hang a towel over, years of dust collected on the palm leaf ceilings, hard beds, moldy smelling pillows and sheets, bugs everywhere, and the list goes on and on.
Food and drinks were lackluster and overpriced. Pool was pathetic with a hot tub at arms length from the dining area. Who wants to have a guy sitting on the side of the hot tub with his crack staring at you in the face while your trying to eat your overpriced meal? There was no beach front service of any kind. We even booked a trip with the resort that we planned our entire day around only to be stood up by the hotel with no boat available as promised. The overall service of the staff was sub-par except for the very friendly bartender who always had a smile on his face.
No maintenance at the hotel whatsoever. Broken lights, chairs, etc... I told our waiter that the seat of one of our chairs had been broken through only to come back hours later to see that it was still on the floor. This place obviously has a low maintenance budget.
After all the frustration I schedule a meeting with the manager in my room to discuss my disappointment. He proceeded to state a somewhat familiar sounding quote repeated in the reviews; "this hotel is not for everone". After telling him I was from Texas he responded by saying that we were spoiled by the more modern closer resorts in Cancun and that their resort was rustic and that is the way they like it. He also stated that they catered more to the taste of Europeans. That is all fine but I think this kind of information should be disclosed by the hotel. I appreciate "rustic" but it doesn't mean that it's okay to have a hotel that is falling apart. Take some pride in your place! If offered a meal comp but I refused, I didn't want the overpriced food anyway. We were so disappointed by the response of the manager that we actually tried to book a place down the beach that had much better accomodations and staff at a better rate but decided not to spend the money just because Matachica didn't give us what we paid for.
There is a nice place next door that serves great low priced FRESH food with great drink specials and plays great music. We noticed this place after we saw half the people from Matachica wondering that way. Very friendly staff! It is very clean and has a great small pool with lounges built in and you can actually see the ocean. After we found this place we lived there the remaining 2 days. We ate lunch there and hung out all day and then got dinner to go and watched movies on our ipod the rest of the evening. Pretty sad that Matachica turned us into cabin trolls on our honeymoon on such a beautiful island.
I can live without a tv, frig, etc... but I can't deal with getting ripped off by poor quality accomodations, poor service, rude management that used the rustic excuse to cover up lack of maintenance and overall hygenic appeal. This hotel ruined the second half of our honeymoon.
