We checked into Hotel Mopan on arrival in Belize City after travelling for 36 hours. Reviews had said it was quiet and clean - and it was both. Rooms are basic but good-sized - a/c worked and was very welcome. Breakfast is cooked to order and was v tasty. Good for short stop or as a base for exploring Belize.

If you are just passing through, the Mopan is an okay place to stay.
At first we were a little frightened by all the warnings of not leaving the hotel after dark, not wearing watches or any type of jewelry, and keeping close. However, after the shock of a dirty city and people "in your face" asking to ride their taxi or bumming for money, it was okay.
The young people at the desk were great about giving us ideas on local places to eat - the food was cheap and good! The staff did not seem friendly, but when you asked them for anything they were kind and accommodating. The rooms were clean, not fancy at all (tiny ants here and there). It is a must to stay on the upper floor or the second floor corner rooms. There was a bar, but did not open when we were there. Breakfast was served and charged to your room (price was reasonable); check the bread baskets for ants. Need to have your own shampoo and conditioner. Overall, it was an okay experience.

I stayed at the Mopan during a business trip to Belize in May. They are located one block from our agent's office. The only downside, I did not get to spend more time. The rooms were very clean, the A/C was ice cold (if you like it cold like me). Also, they have a rooftop where you can take photos of either Belize City or the seawall (one block away). If you want to hang out at night, they have the dining room downstairs with cable TV and ice-cold Beliken beer. and if your lucky, you can have some drinks with Duke...he's the owner's husband and one hell of a host! Internet service in the lobby and quick access to taxi's if needed. They are directly across the street from the Contnental Airlines building.

We stayed only one night here on our way to Caye Caulker. Its a small and decent hotel in a very safe neighbourhood of Belize city. We were shocked by the friendliness of the staff and the people of the neighbourhood. We paid 70 Us dollars for a double airconditioned terrace room which was the most expensive one, and there were no extra taxes and fees as it was mentioned in the previous reviews.The guy at the reception desk answered all of our questions and even let us to use the internet free for awhile.We were advised by the reception to have dinner at a nearby restaurant called `Birds Isle`, and it was the coolest local restaurant we have ever been. The staff was more than friendly and the food was great.If you take a room on the top floor, you have a nice and interesting view and plus a terrace. We also saw that there was a shared terrace on the second floor.The breakfast is fresh,affordable and basic stuff.Like omelette or toast with butter and jam. Tea and coffee is free. it is just 5 minutes walk away and if you cant find it, dont hesitate to ask locals. We did and they were so helpful. This hotel is located in a very safe area unlike the rest of the Belize city. It costs only 7 Belizean dollars by taxi from the main bus station to get here.
