The town of San Ignacio and the surrounding area have plenty of accommodations. However, the San Ignacio hotel is the only upscale establishment within walking distance of the down town area. If you choose to stay in any of the local lodges you will need a car to go anywhere else.

We drove to San Ignacio from the Belize City. Two bridges connecting the town to the Western Highway are strictly one way. Make sure you have a good map with driving direction and arrive before sunset. The hotel is located on a hill overlooking the town next to the casino.

Hotel's lobby is open and inviting. The staff is eager to help. Check in was flawless. We stayed in two balcony rooms. While less opulent that other, they were spacious, clean, comfortable, and well air-conditioned. Bathrooms were spotless. Bedding and towels were changed daily. Each day we received a complimentary bottle of water and some cookies that looked home made.

As you can see from the pictures, the hotel has a wonderful swimming pool overlooking a beautiful garden. Those too tiered to walk up and down the hill can dine at the hotels restaurant. Despite the claim that the meat comes from the owner's farm, steaks are fair at best. Fried snapper, however, was very good. The bar makes very good drinks. Breakfast is served starting at 7 am. On the weekend, it is served buffet style. If you want to venture to any other restaurants in town and do not want to wlak, hotel will gladly call you a cab. Expect to pay 7 BZD for a ride across town.

The grounds of the hotel are in themselves a gem. Take some time and explore their beautiful gardens. You can even request a private tour.

Most come to San Ignacio to explore caves, jungles, and Mayan sites. The hotel can easily arrange all of your excursions with a minimal notice. However, expect to pay a slight premium on the order of 10%. I rather recommend contacting or stopping by one of the local tour agencies. We used Pacz Tours and received superb service. They are located on the main drag next to Eva's.

My wife and I took a trip to San Ignacio, Belize for our 30th anniversary. We stayed at the San Ignacio based on pictures and some reviews. None of the pictures or reviews came close to telling us what a great place this is. The staff, the food, and the hotel are spectacular. We stayed in their best room the Master Suite. It is not really a suite but a large room done in hardwood and marble. It has a great balcony with a Jacuzzi and overlooks the Macal River Valley and jungle. You can sit on the balcony and see parrots and toucans and all sorts of other birds. After a hard day of caving or canoeing or hiking the jungle you can come back to a fabulous room, go to dining room and get very good food. The staff was friendly, helpful, remembered us, and always there. If fact, one of the waiters (to whom we talked each day) bought us a small gift on the day we left so that we would remember him and the hotel. Each day we received a turn-down service which included some type of snack (which was great). It is only a short walk down the hill to the center of town and a short walk back up the hill to the hotel. You can always take a cab if you are too tired to walk. When I needed a cab driver for the day they recommended a gentleman. This guy was great and indeed he drove us for two days and we became friends with him and his wife and daughter. If you need a cab in San Ignacio call Melham Awe (pronounced all-way). His phone number is 663-8907. I just dialed this number on my California cell phone without any area code or country code and I got him. If you want to stay at a wonderful place you will want to stay at the San Ignacio.

“Oasis in the Desert!”

I took my three adult children and sister-in-law and spent 7 nights at this lovely hotel. The newly renovated lobby and other public areas were beautiful and clean. Backing onto the Macal River, you felt like you were deep in the jungle when sitting by the pool, with no visible buildings around. The staff were excellent; very friendly and accomodating. We thoroughly enjoyed the food and great drinks, especially the "Horny Monkey" which my daughter took a particular shine to! The pool was kept clean, our balcony rooms were private and we enjoyed many breakfasts outdoors after walking into town and buying fresh baking and fruit from the street vendors. San Ignacio is an excellent place to do day trips from and we enjoyed Mayan ruins, cave tubing and zip lining to mention just a few. The hotel was very helpful in assisting us in a day trip with an awesome guide. This area will show you what the "real" Belize is like and get you away from the crowds on the coast. It is well worth a trip to.

“great spot”

We stayed here in January and because the hotel was full had to upgrade to a regal room, which was something of a let down as our view was a tin roof. We did have a four poster bed and a smart bathroom, but the bed was set up such that we couldn't see the television nor feel the effects of the fan. The cheaper balcony rooms overlooking the garden might not be so fancy but feel much nicer. Having said that the staff were excellent, nothing was too much trouble, we left our luggage for several days, and organised a gift certificate for friends and it was all done with efficiency and a smile. The food was good too, whether down by the pool or in the restaurant. The setting is beautiful, iguanas basking on the walls by the pool and stunning flowers everywhere. The honeymoon suite upstairs was wonderful, if you are looking for something special. If you are not stick with the balcony/ garden rooms.

“Best in Belize !”

San Ignacio Resort Hotel

What a wonderful hotel; probably the best three star hotel I have ever experiencd. The charming helpfulness of the staff has to get the first mention, followed by the excellent food - and I like my food! We probably stayed in the best room which was lovely but most others I saw also looked good. I didn't like the bar decor much but had all drinks on the patio and the barman was first class. The rates are very good value for money. This place is a haven in slightly remote and fascinating caribbean outpost. A perfect launch pad for several excusions and great experiences, ideal for a daytrip to Tikal in Guatemala. Don't visit Belize without a night or more in this glorious and friendly hotel!!
