The mystic jungle resort is a one of a kind experience. It is located outside of San Ignacio (about 5 miles) but among several other well known and very pricey resorts. The resort is nestled among the green hills and jungle of the Cayo District. San Ignacio is very accessible from MJR but you don't have to deal with the volume of people in town or the noisiness of the streets. This place is a diamond in the rough and will continue to grow. Parts of the resort are still under construction (the restaurant) and they are working out the kinks but overall for the price you cannot beat it.
The accommodations were great as the rooms were clean and spacious. The cabanas are spread out over the property so you are not to close to your neighbor and the only noises you hear at night are the natural surroundings of the jungle. I just loved the personal chair swing located on the porch of our cabana. It was great for taking in the sunset or relaxing in the shade. The pool is refreshing and feels great after a long day of touring sites.
Before arriving at the MJR we had arranged all of our tours (Xunatunich, Tikal, Caracol, ATM, and St. Hermans Cave) through Virginia. She was very instrumental in making sure the tours were set up before we even arrived in the jungle. All of our tours guides were very knowledgable and added some personal flavor to make the tours unforgettable.
This resort is family owned (Belizean) and operated. They have only owned the resort for a year and have put their heart and souls into making it a great place to stay. I felt they appreciated our business and were very open to recommendations.
It was nice to have authentic Belizean dishes for dinner, but all the meals we had at the MJR were fresh and delightful. Margaritas hand tossed flour tortillas and home made tamales are made with love.
I look forward to staying at the MJR again and again. The experience was one of a kind and I could not have asked for more.
