“Noisy”

Midas Tropical Resort

14 Apr 2008

My girlfriend and I stayed here from England over Easter. I have never stayed in such a loud resort! There was a carnival right across the street and we heard music, loud noise, people yelling, etc. each night of our stay. It went on until 3am!!! In fairness, I would hope that was a one time thing, simply because it was Easter.

We felt the tours booked through the resort were overpriced. We were told that Midas' tours offer more services, but when compared when tours in town, the services looked the same. I know their shuttle to town is the most expensive in the area....

I probably wouldn't stay there again simply because of noise. I would look at staying outside of the town. However, we did enjoy the proximity to town and the friendliness off the staff.

Cheers

“Great little spot!”

Midas Tropical Resort

10 Apr 2008

We loved our stay at the Midas Resort. I booked online at their website, all went smoothly. The price was great, and the owners, Maria and her sons, as well as the other staff, were very welcoming and helpful. The location was great for us, traveling with 2 young kids (4 and 5), as it is just outside of town and quiet. At the same time, it is close enough to walk (it took us less than 10 minutes, with slow kids!) We took Maria's suggestion, and took a taxi to the Cahal Pech Village hotel for the day, to use the pool. We also went on a great tour of Barton Creek cave with Mike (at David's Tours), and swimming at Barton Creek Outpost (this place is a magical little spot in the jungle, great swimming hole!), and while my husband went on a tour of the ATM cave, the kids and I took a guided canoe ride down the river to Chaa Creek Lodge to see the butterflies. Midas resort was a great base for all of this, we LOVED San Ignacio! And it smells like orange blossoms - right next door, at Hode's, there is an restaurant in the orange orchard, with the best kids playground I've ever seen. We would stop there on the way home and have a Belikin while the kids played. I would definitely recommend Midas resort to other travelers seeking a clean, comfortable, safe place to stay. It's private, lush, and the owners are great!

We stayed in a brand new room that was very clean and nicely furnished. No real problems with the room (except no hot water for the first two days), and the hotel is nicely situated by downtown San Ignacio.

The only problem we had was the hotel concierge/manager trying to take advantage of us. We booked transportation back to Belize City through the hotel and paid US $65 each. The hotel did not provide transportation directly, but rather booked us on a local shuttle. When we got in the shuttle we were traveling with a family of three who booked their trip directly with the local shuttle and were paying US $55 for all three. We got screwed by Midas! They took almost US $100 from us just to arrange transportation with the local carrier.

I would stay there again, but I would never think about booking anything through the hotel. Chances are you're getting a horrible deal. The hotel is a few minutes from town where you can book all tours and transportation directly with local vendors.

Management Response

We are very sorry to hear that you feel that we took advantage.

We do have our own transportation but there days when Michael and Matthew have to go to their University and that is when we contact one other tour company that we use.

A lot of third party companies do this with resorts where they continue to charge their normal rate with the resort and try to find other clients to go on a shuttle or tour at a ridiculous price because they have already made their money, so anything extra is a bonus and they don't inform the resort or give us a better deal.

When we give a job to a tour company hotels and resorts only get 15% commission at the most. We are investigating the matter further and if you would like to email us directly we will find away to resolve this case.

For the hot water issue we are totally at fault but one of our best employees lost an important family member and we were trying our best to help him and the resort was neglected for a couple of days. We apologise for this but we have not had such a close lost for long while.

We look forward to hearing from you soon.

“A great place to stay”

Midas Tropical Resort

My daughter and I recently spent four wonderful days at Midas Resort in San Ignacio. We had the best time. The cabins are adorable, spacious, clean and very comfortable. The grounds are beautiful and the staff could not do enough for us. Maria, Michael and Abraham were always pleasant, helpful and provided excellent service. The location is perfect, a few minutes walk to town, yet secluded and quiet, with easy access to local Mayan sites and tour options. Couldn't ask for a better place to stay.

“Loved it”

Midas Tropical Resort

26 Feb 2008

Fantastic place to come and visit. Was my home away from home. The staff was very friendly and informative. They provided me with loads of information on a bunch of diffent topics related to Belize.

The cabanas are clean and comfortable with working hot water, AC (in some cabanas), fans and TV. Most have verandas and hammocks and chairs.

I found this a great place to stay. It is just outside of "downtown" so it is quiet and in a very nice setting, but is only a couple mins walking to the downtown. Prices are reasonable as well.

Highly recommend!

I stayed for almost a week, went to some other places in Belize, but ending coming back for almost another week because I like the resort and the city so much.
