Cahal Pech Resort is a beautiful property. I had seen it 13 years ago on my first trip to Belize, and this time, returning, I decided to stay there.
We booked the Family Cabana with Air Conditioning. This was a cabana with an upstairs and downstairs. We had 4 full sized beds and 2 bathrooms. Each level also had a television and air conditioning unit. The screened porch with chairs and a hammock was really, really nice too. Unfortunately, we had some issues with the air conditioning. We ran it for almost three hours and nothing had cooled down at all. The staff was outstanding, responding immediately to our needs. They came to check the air conditioners and agreed that they were not properly functioning. They offered to have maintenance check them or to move us to another room.
We opted for another room as it was getting late and we were all too hot and too tired. We could take two cabanas that did not connect from the inside (putting our teen girls in their own unit) or we could take the 2 bedroom suite in the main building, which we were told had a balcony and a wonderful view.
Wanting to keep our family together, we opted for the suite in the main building. In retrospect, I kind of wish we'd taken the two cabanas. The cabanas are much newer and are really fun to stay in with the screened porches. They are also very roomy.
The suite in the main building was adequate. It was clean and the air conditioners worked well. It just wasn't eye pleasing like the cabanas and there wasn't as much space. The paint on the walls was peeling, the colors were kind of odd. We had a kitchen with a fridge, which was great! A microwave and a sink, plus a kitchen table. It was in a very small kitchen area, but it worked. The bathroom was pretty small and the shower was wacky...it couldn't be moved...it sprayed wildly all over the place, but the water pressure was good! We had a "family room" with a couch and tv. The furniture in the suite was like your grandma's early 1970's stuff. The two bedrooms were bare, but clean. We had a single bed, a 3/4 bed, a full bed and a queen. The balcony was small, and accessed from one bedroom through a solid door, but as promised, the view was really nice. So in summary, the room was clean and usable, just not "pretty". Hahaha!
The staff, however, was amazing. They were very helpful and did whatever they could to make us comfortable, which we really appreciated. The swimming pools were clean and felt great to swim in. There is a big teradactyl bird statue that spews water...my son asked if they would turn it on and they graciously did. The food at the restaurant was moderately priced...more expensive than town, but not crazy priced like most resorts. It was delicious and the staff there was also very accommodating.
I would stay here again, but I would also be curious to check out the San Ignacio Hotel. I had a bad experience there 13 years ago, but the place has completely changed, so who knows!
