Hotel Maya left a bad taste and it wasn't just the fake orange juice

I was there a few days ago, thanks to other tripadvisor reviews, but I now feel driven to write (for the first time ever) on this website and in very negative terms.

I asked them do some laundry which wasn't cheap at 20 Belizean dollars. They "forgot" to return a treasured Beijing Olympics T-shirt, which I did indeed buy in Beijing during the Olympics. I didn't realise the omission until well into Mexico. I emailed the hotel to ask them if it could be posted to an address in Mexico. Predictably, they haven't replied. Thank you Hotel Maya.

Yes, I should have checked my returned laundry but I stupidly trusted them.

I will also add that the previous comments about the showers are too generous. They have the worst showers in the Americas. While I waited for the dribble to hit one area of my body, the rest of my body dried out!

The so-called orange juice at breakfast is basically a sugar-filled soft drink that tastes disgusting to anyone over the age of ten. The coffee was pathetically weak (and instant).

There were ants on the floor of my room because it hadn't been cleaned properly after the previous guest and yes, i did spot a small cockroach in the bathroom but it escaped quickly into a hole in the wall.

Hotel Maya doesn't even look good from the outside. This place only survives, I imagine, because the competition is weak.

Having chosen Hotel Maya as our base camp for our travels to the Corozal district of Belize, I have to say I'm really glad I did so. Whilst there's a number of other hotels to choose from this one seems the most established and reputable and the owner and receptionist were both really helpful and easy to talk to. They were great in suggesting nice places to eat and even arranged for one of the owner's friends to take us across the bay on a fun 10 minute boat ride to a 2,000 year old Mayan ruin called Cerros and then up the river, for a modest price! Sure, Corozal is just a small town and a bit of a culture shock if you're travelling down from busy Mexico (its 10 miles from the border) but seeing as we were after a taste of what the real Belize is like I think we got it! The hotel had some lovely views on to the bay directly in front and the rooms, whilst not luxurious, were just what we needed - tidy, comfortable and welcoming! The only thing that was missing in my opinion was a hook to hang our hammocks on. The hotel also arranged our flights to San Pedro, a lovely island off the reef (WAY nicer than Playa and not full of vendors selling the same thing everywhere) and when we got back for one last overnight stay they arranged our bus travel to Belize City. I think they're agents for a nice bus company that goes all the way to Tikal in Guatemala, all I can say is we were really tempted! Overall a relaxing and rejuvenating. I think the Hotel's sign says something like "your no. 1 stop on la Ruta Maya" and it certainly lived up to that!

  • Liked — the hotel fitted its surroundings just perfectly i think and we were always able to relax and chill out when we got back to the hotel after whatever we did that day!
  • Disliked — nothing comes to mind, i wish they'd opened their restaurant all year round...i think they only do it for big groups but it was nice to be able to go out for a meal in other restaurants

Nice small hotel next to main road entering the town. Room was fairly big, clean, and modern, I had a common terrace with sea view that felt like it was my own as there were no other guests in the hotel - US$30.

We'd had a bit of a mental journey by the time we got to Corozal and when we got there (bit of a different vibe from Mexico where we'd just come from) we were a bit freaked out.

but then we got to Maya and the owner was so kind to us - it was the day after new years day and practically everything was shut but they'd just cooked up a meal for themselves and said that we were welcome to some of it. it seriously was the best meal that i have ever had - and it's called Molé. some day i will get around to trying it myself, but apparently it takes all day to cook - and i am worried that i will never be able to do it as well.

So, sorry it's taken a year to write this review - but i just read a negative one which i think is a bit unfair.Yeah the rooms are a bit basic, but it was fine, honestly. we'd just spent the last few days in a scorpion infested hut for the same money!

We had a room on the third floor, which was very basic. The air conditioning worked fine, which we were happy about. In the morning, I took a shower, and the water stopped in the middle of my shower. I think if we had been on a lower floor, we may have been ok. I don't know if this is a problem with the hotel, or if there just isn't enough water presure in Corozal. I Cuba, where they don't have any water presure, hotels put large barrel on the roof and pump the water into the barrels.

I would have rather stayed at a room for rent, which probably would have been about as nice, and much cheaper.
