My husband (in his mid-50s) and I (late 40s) just returned from a very relaxing week (the week after Christmas through the New Year) of diving and dining at Reef House Resort. This place is remote, about a 45 minute van ride and a 10 minute boat ride, from the airport, past some riviting Central American poverty. All transportation is arranged by the resort, no extra charge. Once at the resort, the owner Mike, knowing we had not yet had lunch, served us a pre-dinner snack (it was late afternoon.) Dinners, served at 6:30, were very filling, each with sald and desert, featuring crab and lobster and steak. The diving was easy, with a 9:00 boat, returning after 2 tanks, then lunch, then a 2:30 boat. My husband took numerous photos, lots of "new to us" critters. Unlimited shore diving -- other divers told us the house reef was fine. Overall, several days of choppy weather, night rains and corral bloom interfered with the viz. Many crab, lobsters, eel, remarkable corral heads, etc. A loan hammerhead was spotted by three in our group.
The resort itself is low-key (think cabin-esque), but updates (new linens, flat screen TVs and dressers) are ordered. You can tell there have been recent updates (new commodes, sinks, roofs and paint.)
NOTE: there is literally nothing to do here unless you dive, snorkel or read. If you do any of those, you'll have a tremendously relaxing week. The week at Reef House was one of our best trips in 6 years of diving, with at least 3 international trips per year.
