The Koutoubia is the main mosque in Marrakech and is just a short walk from the Djemma el-Fna. It has a beautiful minaret that dominates the skyline and this can be seen from almost every approach to the city. The mosque, however, is closed to non-Muslims so a visit is limited to viewing it from the outside. Tucked away behind the mosque is a well-manicured garden, which is full of ever-flowering rose bushes and citrus trees and makes a delightful place to escape the noise and commotion of the busy medina. The only noise here is the sound of water sprinklers and the occasional call of the muezzin. Here you can sit in the shade of orange trees and either people watch or admire the renovated stonework of the minaret. This is a place I have visited often to relax and watch the world go by.
