This is a semi-permanent tented camp, and it was located close to the Mara River in July. We chose it because we wanted to be nearby the Great Migration at this time of the year. Among the five lodges/tented camps that we stayed, Lemala Mara was the best, followed by the Ngorongoro Serena.
The main advantage is the remote location. If you have a driver-guide who is good at spotting animals, there will be fewer vehicles fighting to get the best viewing angle. Driving off the official tracks seemed to be slightly less observed.
There are only eight tents, and meals are served in a communal table. This allowed us to know other guests and share different experiences. Before dinner, guests spend time in the ´bush TV´, actually a bonfire near the main tent. Most of the beverage and drinks are complimentary.
The tents are very confortable and the staff carries the hot water to your tent when you are ready to take a shower.
There is an overall rustic and adventurous feeling, but combined with very confortable accomodations and helpful and friendly staff.
We decided to drive to Northern Serengeti instead of flying to the airstrip. This decision brought advantages and disadvantages. On one hand, we made our return trip to Central Serengeti using a road outside the park, bordering its west side. This enriched our journey as we were able to see the country side villages and people that were very different from what we saw in Arusha, Dar Es Salam or Zanzibar. On the other hand, the trip from Central Serengeti to Lemala Mara inside the park was long and boring, and we crossed some woodland infested by tse-tse flies (which entertained the kids as they tried to kill the insects inside the car).
The three-course dinner menu is fixed, so you run the risk of having to eat something that you dislike. However, the food was always delicious and neither us or the other guests had any problem with it.
They do complimentary laundry for three pieces of clothing. Unfortunately they forgot our basket and we had to leave the camp with some clothes still wet. Nothing that lowers our high appreciation of our stay.
