My colleagues and I had an extended stay at the Kampala Serena for business travel. When we first arrived in Kampala, several locals and expats mentioned that the Serena was considered the nicest hotel in all of Kampala and possibly all of Uganda. In our experience, the Serena lived up to this reputation and after visiting other local hotels for various functions, we found that the services and facilities at the Serena were truly a cut above the rest.
The hotel is in a convenient location within Kampala. Overall, the staff was professional, welcoming and service-oriented. While traveling in Kampala and staying at the Serena however, it is important to keep in mind that if you expect quick and efficient service found in some other large cities, you will be disappointed. It is a good idea to allot extra time for your meals, transportation and business services needs (e.g., conference call equipment took over an hour to obtain). Internet access was spotty and slow at times, but this was the case throughout the city. Laundry was very expensive, but the service was quick.
Rooms were clean, spacious and well-appointed. Each of our rooms had a private balcony and the restroom had both a tub and shower. (As a side note, if you talk in the bathroom, your neighbors can hear you through the vent.) Regardless of whether your room faces the street or pool side, you will likely hear some noise through your balcony door at some point during your stay. The hallways are rather long, so if you require a room closer to the elevator, be sure to specify this.
There were several lounge and restaurant options at the hotel, making it convenient for business meetings and functions. The Lakes Restaurant offered a good breakfast buffet with enough variety for our extended stay and a peaceful dining environment by the water garden.
Afternoon tea featuring a special rooibos blend was very enjoyable. The food at the Pearl of Africa restaurant was solid, but I would only recommend it for a leisurely dinner due to the slow service.
In terms of amenities, the gym, spa and outdoor pool were beautiful, well-kept and provided a great way to decompress from Kampala's hustle and bustle (the Sesse Pool Bar offered various poolside food options).
The next time I am in town, I plan on returning to the Serena Kampala and in my future travels to other destinations, I will strongly consider staying at Serena properties.
