Had the pleasure of meeting Ben, Alex and their wonderful staff last week.
The main purpose of my trip to Bangkok was to have alot of tailoring done to replace my aging suits/shirts from previous bangkok/hong kong tailors.
I knew exactly what i wanted. 2 3-peice suits, 30 shirts and around 10 pairs of pants. A friend of mine who did not accompany me on this trip gave me a shirt and suit to clone.
After reading alot of reviews online about tailoring in Bangkok, i decided to go with either Rajawongse or Tailor on Ten.
A few months before my trip i emailed Tailor on Ten to book an appointment. This was all done over the chat function on their website in real time.
last week, i arrived in Bangkok on Saturday. My booking for Tailor on Ten was on the Sunday, so i decided to check out Rajawongse.
The place was very packed, people everywhere, made it extremely hard to navigate around the room to look at the fabrics.
Due to this, the owners wernt able to focus their attention to me. I asked them how much a suit was and was told a price, i then asked which fabrics that price referred to. The owner pointed to the entire back wall and said every fabric, they are all cashmere. Which i found rather hard to believe at that price point.
Now the reason why i concidered these guys was that they claim to have done suits for George Bush etc. But you got to ask yourself, George Bush wasnt known for his fashion sense or awesome suits.
I thanked the owner and said that i might be back. The next day i arrived at Tailor on Ten. Its located right at the end of Soi 8. I was greeted by Alex and Kevin. Apparently they are closed on Sundays but they opened to store to accommodate my appointment.
Had a nice chat to Alex about different types of fabrics and then we got down to business. I explained to him that i was in Bangkok for 7 nights and i was placing a rather large order.
First off was picking what fabrics i wanted for my suit. I knew that i wanted a navy and a charcoal suit. I had the option of choosing a cheaper chinese fabric that was pretty decent or choose the italian fabrics.
You could definately feel the quality in the italian fabrics. I ended up picking a super 110s for the charcoal suit and the super 120s for the navy suit.
Next was to start choosing 30 different fabrics for the shirts. Tailor on Ten offer 2 types of fabrics for shirts. Premium and Luxury. Due to my large bulk order Alex allowed me to choose any shirt fabric i wanted at the price point of the Premium fabric, sweet.
I divivded the fabrics into 3 categories. 10 x Check/Gingham 10 x striped and 10x plain/solid.
The fabric selection was quite large. I struggled trying to picture how shirts would look for certain fabric patterns. Whenever this happened, Alex or Kevin would give me very helpful advice and recommendations. These guys know their stuff. They know the different types of fabrics, they know the different weaves of the fabric, they know how the weave affects the fabrics (eg: weight, wrinkles etc).
There was this crazy Lumber Jack plaid sort of pattern that looked really disgusting, but somehow Alex talked me into picking it. Let me tell you after seeing it made into a shirt... i actually think it might be my most favourite shirt out of them all.
After picking all the shirts i then had to pick the fabrics for my pants. I decided to purchase 3 chino pants and 5 standard trousers in the cheaper chinese fabric.
While all of this was going on, another friend of mine was picking out the fabrics for the suit/5 shirts and 3 pants our other friend wanted copied.
After all the fabrics was selected, we sat down and decided on the style of the suit, shirt and pants. This wasnt new to me as i have done this many times with other tailors and online tailor websites. i knew exactly what i wanted, but certain areas that i was unsure had good advice from Alex.
Now be aware that the more fittiings you have for a suit the better. The whole purpose you go made to measure is for the fit. And to obtain the best fit you have to have several fittings.
After this, i got measured up and then we were done. My next fitting would be on the Tuesday.
Now these guys only deal with cash, but due to my order being very large, total was well over 100,000 baht. Alex gave me the option to pay via PayPal. However i decided to withdraw 20,000 baht everday and pay them at each fitting.
So Tuesday came and the basic frame of the suit was made, a sample shirt, pants and waistcoat. I told them i wanted everything to be very slim fitting. So several pins where put in here and there until i was happy with the fit.
In the past with other tailors, during the fitting stage. The tailors would try and talk you out of what you want. You would say, the waist is too high on the pants i want it lower and the tailor would say, thats how you're suppose to wear suit pants bla bla bla. They would try every trick in the book to do the most minimum amount of work. This results in having suits/pants/shirts made that dont fit.
Tailor on Ten on the other hand were like, yeah we can do that. I was extremely happy with how the fitting was handled.
I was told that they were really confident with the shirt and pants and wanted to make the alterations and then come to my hotel later that day for me to try on and finally five them the final ok for the shirt and pants to start pumping out.
Later that day their tailor arrived at my hotel with the shirt and pants. The fit was spot on perfect. I gave him the OK and booked the next fitting for Thursday.
When i arrived on Thursday, I was greeted by Ben. He just came back from Malaysia. Just like his brother, he knew his stuff aswell.
They had a large amount of the shirts made for me to try on and both suits. I tried on every single shirt. There was about 25 that i tried on. They all fit perfect and exactly the same. It was also great to see that most of the fabric choices turned out great. All the shirt fabrics feel awesome. I've owned several shirts from different tailors and none of them ever felt this good.
Pants were spot on. The suit was almost perfect. adjustments had to be made to the shoulders and a couple other little things.
Final fitting was booked on the Friday. They had the rest of the shirts and pants completed and the suits were now compelted. Tried on all the pants/shirts and as always they were spot on and exactly the same as the others.
Saturday, came in to collect everything. They showed me my friends completed suit/shirt/pants and all of my stuff. They called me a cab to my hotel and that was my experience with Tailor on Ten.
If you want honest tailors who know their stuff, Tailor on Ten is your best bet. They wont hassle you with things you dont want, they wont try and talk you out of changes you want to your suit (unless its something completely stupid). They'll tell you the truth on everything. The prices are fixed, so you dont have to play the haggling game. The prices are higher compared to other tailors, but you know what? You get what you pay for, and i've now learnt this. Alex, Ben and their staff gave us advice on where to travel in Bangkok (Kevin actually took us out on the Friday night into town).
Cheers guys, will definately be doing more business with you guys in the future.
