The tallest building in Thailand, and formerly the tallest hotel in the World. You'd expect a luxurious 5 star establishment. From the outside and the entrance hall you feel that you are stepping into a luxury hotel. However the Baiyoke Sky has been priced in the medium to budget price range and upon entering the hotel you can see why it is in this price range. The scale of everything in the hotel is massive. But the decor is drab and dated and there is a musky smell in the corridors.
The staff are helpful and attentive.
The lobby is on the 17th Floor and is cahotaic, with people checking in, using the small bar on this floor or waiting for lifts to the other floors. There are 3 main lifts, from the ground floor to the lobby, from the lobby to the bar/observation deck and from the lobby to the residential floors. You need to use you door key to operate the lifts to the residential floors.
We were upgraded from a deluxe to an executive deluxe room in the Sky zone. The room was massive, but I felt that there was a lot of wasted space (you could easily of got another double bed in one corner of the room. The view was spectacular with floor to ceiling windows. This was spoiled by the windows being noticeably dirty though. The bathroom was large with a bath, WC and separate shower cubicle. The bedroom did suffer from bad sound-proofing though as we could hear nosies from the plumbing in the adjoining room.
The breakfasts were again intriguing, with food from all over the World (Muslim, indian, Japanese as well as western). Food was served on the 77th floor again giving amazing Bangkok panoramic views. The food was very good.
The bar on the 87th. floor again had great views but was dark and dingy.
The hotel is convenient for some markets and shopping centres, but is around 15 minute walk from the Sky train should you want to visit other shops and sights. Phaya Thai is the closest station. The Sky train extension to the airport will run next to the hotel when it eventually opens.
We did find some food stalls around the back of the Baiyoke Sky (on Si Ayutthaya Road). We didn't get a chance to eat there, but there, but there were plenty of locals eating there, so they may be worth checking out.
The Baiyoke Sky could have made a fantastic luxury hotel. As it stands, it is a fun place to stay (for the room space and views) and extremely good value for money. You do however you do get what you pay for.
